Again, thanks ALL!

I should've "google" it first, feel so stupid now:

AI Overview

In California, cargo can generally extend up to 4 feet beyond the rear of a vehicle's bed or body without a special permit. If the load extends 4 feet or more, a solid red or fluorescent orange flag (at least 12 inches square) is required during the day, and red lights are required at night.
California DMV (.gov) +3
California Overhang Regulations
  • Rear Extension: Maximum 4 feet allowed before requiring specific flagging/lighting (CVC §24604).
  • Front Extension: Maximum 3 feet allowed.
  • Side Extension: Maximum 4 inches beyond the side of the vehicle.
  • Flagging Requirements: If the load extends 4 feet or more to the rear, a 12-inch red/orange flag must be placed at the extreme end of the load.
  • Night Driving: If driving during darkness (or when lights are required), 2 red lights visible from 500 feet must be used at the end of the load.
My method doesn't stick out much at all.

I have used this method
What's wrong with securing it in the bed with the tailgate dropped and a red flag tied on the end?
With my bendy ladder on the old truck to haul 12 foot boxes of siding home from the lumber yard, but that was only 4 feet of overhang.

Didn't you say you were just trying to pickup a 14' ladder from a seller on Facebook Marketplace?

It will be gone before you figure it out! Don't over-complicate it, just go get it.
You're right, it may be gone. There are 3 people ahead of me and even they gave me the address I won't drive 30 miles away while they said first come first serve. A 28' extension ladder in excellent condition for only $45 is a steal.

I got a roof rack because I do haul long boards and ladders regularly. But before that, I would hook up my trailer . I think I might be the only one around Knoxville that has one

Which rack is that? Do you like it?

I believe the rack came from “Cybertruckco.com, it is the base rack for several applications.
