It’s adorable to think that the tax money in NJ will go to roads and not vacation homes for politicians.
*sigh*

In NJ politicians are seemingly bought and paid for in cash or gold bars. C'mon man. ;-)

Iowa used to be friendly for EV licensing. Five years ago a $900/year surcharge is now tacked onto annual licensing fees. EV’s are not green friendly, but GREENBACK friendly here in Iowa! Not much incentive to be green!

+$900/year? That is insane.

I dont mind a use tax as we do use the roads and honestly have a disproportionate impact due to the weight of most EVs, but $250+ is a bit high. The NJ tax rate on gas is 42.3c per gallon. So at $250 we are saying I would have used 591 or so gallons of gas a year. That is assuming a awful lot of miles driven per year for such a small state. The average MPG of a car in the US is 25.4 MPG. That means they think the average person in NJ drives 15k miles a year? I do about 12-14k personally and that is on the high end for most of my friends and family. Online sources seem to say the typical NJ person is 12,xxx yr.

My math says we should be paying about $210yr if we are using average miles driven by a person in NJ.

What bothers me more though is ending of the rebates and tax incentives when EVs are still only <2% of registered vehicles on the road in NJ. Kinda goes against what the Charge Up NJ program claimed to care about.

I could not agree more. Thanks for running the numbers for us. $210 vs 250 makes it easier to swallow. Most of my miles are in other states from road trips so it is a heavy tax on EVs but I'm sure that was pushed for by ICE embracers. Glad I got the my two Model Ys before that. Thanks again.

Back in the days, I used to pay around $600/Yr for X5 and then GL. Considered as property tax for 5 yrs straight on registration, after that tax was based on depreciated value. Somehow IA state thought, vehicles don't depreciate till 5 yrs :p

To be fair for both ICE and EV drivers, I think showing odometer is better. Upload/share a photo of your odometer at each tab renewal, showing that day's newspaper/CNBC's front page in the same frame (so that you are not showing an old photo)
Sure, but that takes a lot of work to confirm and there's no telling if that's even the correct vehicle or maybe someone else's vehicle.

And then there are the things such as the data becoming public, and your insurance agency can get it, that scares a lot of people.

Of course it's excessively easy to modify the photo.

In most states the road tax money gets directly allocated to the highway fund.

If you are afraid of data being public, then you can opt-out and pay the flat fee.

A photo from the center console screen showing your VIN and odometer will stop people from showing a different vehicle. If your car doesn't support that, pay the higher flat fee. (that's the choice you made from buying a car that doesn't support this function)

I am all for choices and let people choose what they want with selections that are equally fair.

So go get your government to implement it. That would be awesome to see some owners get involved with the process.
Maybe you can even setup the company that reads the pictures and validates them.

Why would I pay for what YOU want?
I'm relatively happen with Georgia's solution, more than I want to pay, but any new "tax" is going to be more than you want to pay.
I've been paying on multiple EVs ever since it was created.

And I smile every year as I don't have to have an emissions inspection!
