It's like anything that is unique or worth something, but as a security specialist once told me " you are only secure as YOUR mind wants to be"

It is still out of reach for a lot of folks around here who just need a fleet-style basic truck. But for everyone driving a limited (or equivalent) I'll know mine is probably cheaper up front, cheaper in the long run, and ALSO kicks their truck's ass in specs.
When I bought my 2010 F-150 in 2009, I was planning on buying the most basic, fleet style truck (but I needed four-wheel drive for firewood cutting). That means I had to move up to an XLT (the regular f-150 is only RWD). And I wanted electric windows because the cab is too wide to reach over and turn a crank on the passenger window. That required another expensive package with stuff I didn't want. Truck manufacturers have it all figured out so they don't have to sell hardly any of the lowest MSRP they like to advertise. The only people that buy RWD pickups around here are fleets that never leave pavement because this is a wet climate.

Maybe it's different in Kentucky, but here in Washington, pretty much everyone is in for at least $40k when buying a new 1/2 ton pickup and the average is not that far under $60K. Add a large weekly gas bill on top of that.

You may have a point and perhaps new vehicle buyers around here are more likely to buy the upgrades. I do see a LOT of RWD pickups on the road that would be more in the 25-35k range new.

Not everyone is willing to do the math to understand the monthly fuel savings which, in the pickup world, are even more dramatic.

Every conversation is an education opportunity - both ways - and I plan to do my part. :)

Wonder if there's a way to get vehicle purchase data for an area for analysis...

Not that I know of, not without paying a third-party data company for it. But you can get a pretty good idea by going to your nearest high-volume dealership and wander through the lot looking at window stickers, you might be shocked! I'm shocked at how many they keep in stock with no buyers in sight. Trucks generally sell for below the sticker price but it's typically not a huge amount.

The thing is, that's the price before the buyer adds things like canopies, bull bars, off-road lights, lift kits, bigger tires, fender flares, winches, rhino coatings, racks and loading ramps, etc.

...We never had four-wheel drive until long after we didn't have a wood-only heating.

I only remember the truck getting really stuck once, and that was when dad drove it onto the bar and it sank into the pea-gravel. That stuff was tough to walk on, so no figuring it was hard to drive in.

When you said "bar" my first thought was your dad drove his truck into a drinking establishment, lol! Then I realized you meant river bar. :ROFLMAO:

I cut storm-downed trees on Forest Service Land in the mountains and, in the spring after the winter storms have gone, I'm competing with others to get the good burning stuff that doesn't require packing the rounds too far, especially not up steep embankments.

Mountain snow covers parts of the road into June, even if most of the road is clear. So those with more snow mobility have many more miles of road open for collecting and can get better firewood that is quicker pickin. 4x4 helps you get in/out with a nice big load of quality wood by opening up the high country sooner. The roads can also be very wet, have huge washouts and be treacherous in other ways. Rear wheel drive only is very limiting even for an experienced driver. It can be made to work but it's just one more limitation as to what is doable and what is not.

Great, now I have to add an aftermarket lightning rod.
If you get (un?)lucky with your lightning strike you might end up back in the 80's.

Dad's old truck once got hit with lightning- well, a ground side stroke - while we were in it when I was little. Little purple halos around everything like if you pull a bandaid off in the dark,

After seeing many videos showing a lot of animosity toward Tesla vehicles, I am a bit concerned about my safety and the safety of my Cybertruck. Tesla sedans/SUVs are not as easily recognizable as the Cybertruck, yet they draw a degree of negative attention. Anyone else share my concerns? I know it will have sentry mode, but that will not protect the truck from idiots. Will you feel safe leaving it in a parking lot at night for an extended period of time? Could vandalism lead to higher insurance rates?Equipt the Cybertruck anyway you want to, I will eventually get used to driving a Cybertruck. In the meantime, I just want it to be able to pass a safety check.
