Sail pillar recall fix isn't working (fell off again)

While I had the truck in the service department to fix my tonneau cover not closing properly (still not fixed), they performed the recall service on my sail pillar covers. A few days later it blew off in traffic on the highway, hit the car behind me. Whatever the fix is, it's either inadequate or isn't being performed properly.

That’s not good, was there damage to the vehicle it hit? They need to get this figured out immediately. A very unsafe situation to have anything flying off of a vehicle.

Has anyone else who had the sail appliqués replaced notice a bit of waviness to the new version compared to the originals. I think I saw they’re using some double-sided foam tape. If it’s only in some sections, that would more than likely raise them in those areas.

I pulled over at the next exit and the truck kept going so either he didn't think there was damage or didn't care. I went back a few hours later to see if the part was in the ditch but couldn't fine it. There is no tape on the truck, just a few sticky spots here and there.

That's funny, my Cybertruck, delivered on April 10th, has never seen a service center since I drove it off the lot. It has plenty of off-roading and highway driving with no sign of the trim coming loose. Yes, I have lightly tried to pry it off, to simulate wind forces, to no effect.

While we don't want plastic parts flying off on the freeway, I find it funny how in a modern world people think this is dangerous. The chances of someone getting hurt are exceedingly low. Kind of like the FAA worrying that the new tiles on SpaceX's Starship have to go through a year long regulatory review process before it can fly over unpopulated areas.

I mean our nations highways are littered with auto parts that have come off moving vehicles, hubcaps, mufflers, fenders, wheels and tires (those are actually dangerous), etc.

one of my appliqués were missing a clip, you could lightly pull on the cover for the cross bar mounting points and the trim would pull up in that area. Mine stayed on, but if wind managed to get under it might have had the entire piece flying off.

I agree the plastic itself isn’t that dangerous, but could still cause damage to a vehicle or temporarily obstruct someone’s vision. I think the bigger safety risk is how other motorists react. I’ve seen many people swerve for an object with no regard to other drivers in adjacent lanes.

It's not ideal to have parts flying off. I just don't think most Cybertrucks produced to date would ever have that happen. But there was a problem on a few early production units and so Tesla addressed it in a strong manner. Perhaps too strong. But maybe better safe than sorry.

I'm just surprised anyone thinks this is a big deal.

When I first heard about the appliqué recall I checked mine to see if they weren't well attached. It's easy to do; just lift the inside edges with a bit of force, checking the entire length of the appliqué. Short strips of double-sided automotive trim mounting tape is used to affix the inside edges. If any of those strips are not well-adhered to both the sail and the appliqué it will be easier to lift it up.

I found one point where I could more easily lift up the appliqué and I could see that the mounting tape wasn't adhered to the plastic. After cleaning the areas on the sail and the appliqué adjacent to the old tape with alcohol (lifting up the appliqué just enough to gain access), I applied a strip of fresh 3M 03615 tape to the sail and pressed the appliqué down firmly. It held tightly when I checked a couple of hours later.

That fix held up well - I checked it periodically - until the SC performed the recall work. I've checked the new appliqués' attachment occasionally and they are working fine. If one does loosen it would be much easier to fix it myself than taking it back to the SC.

After the replacement, mine were loose on each side near the position of the control switches. Mobile service did some additional double-sided tape on those two locations and the sail appliqués seem pretty secure. I like the new appliqués because they aren’t “wavy,” and are much more consistently flat.

I held off on my DIY plastic protection using XPEL Armor on the sails until I got the recall parts installed. Got it home yesterday and went to town with the armor…only to find a lack of complete install of the new pieces. Should have taken a before photo, but I was too far into it before I noticed.

Photo here shows the areas in reference, but I first realized the pieces weren’t fully “clicked” into place when I laid the XPEL and started tucking it down between the exterior steel panels on both sides. The appliqué was standing proud from the top edge of the steel down towards the tailgate, and a small portion of the vertical outside edge of the trim was visible from 5’ back.

Started to push and feel around to see wtf was going on and the thing wasn’t even fully clipped in, mainly around the controls/rack mounts on the drivers side, but almost end to end on the passenger side. Once I saw it, I hammered around both sides and got the thing locked into what I hope to be its final home, but we’ll see how things go. Highly recommend the XPEL Armor though haha…pleased with the product overall-easy install, corners are fairly easy once you figure out the cuts, and it look like it should from the factory IMO.

Maybe the whole recall thing was just lazy installers not using their rubber mallets properly ??‍♂ Juse be sure to check them if you do get the recall work done!

This just happened to me today. The solution they came up with for the recall is inadequate. My piece hit the car behind me. I feel terrible. I could have hurt someone.

This was my case as well. I picked it up from SC after having the recall work done and drove to work. Walking back to the truck for lunch I could clearly see the sails were not lying flat in places. So I went around and pounded all the high points with my fist and heard the pieces click together.

Hasn't been an issue since. So likely a tech did a quick job and didn't get all the clips pushed in. I probably wouldn't have noticed myself, except walking up from a certain angle you could see the sails edge didn't run parallel to the SS.
