How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

Yeah, there's no question about it. It's a compromise that I was willing to make. On the highway I like to stop every 150 - 160 miles anyway, so adding a little extra charge makes up for the loss of range. Once off road, the range loss due to the rack and tent is minimal due to slower speeds...

How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

Thanks. Interesting. I think the fairing on the Urander rack does a lot to maintain aerodynamics and avoid wind noise. Just my guess, though.

How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

I didn't know about the Mars wind noise. I have not experienced any wind noise. I found, though, that it's very important to make sure the front fairing is installed tightly to the glass roof to prevent wind noise.

How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

The box is a solar power station containing a 2.5 kWh LFP battery, 20A Renogy Rover charge controller, and a 1000W inverter. I have a 420W REC Alpha Pure 2 solar panel attached to the tent roof. I use the solar power station to power my camping accessories (refrigerator, BougeRV A/C for the...

How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

The power hit was someone else. I recently drove a 577 mile round trip and measured an overall 523 Wh/mi. On another 430 mile round trip I got an overall efficiency of 532 Wh/mi with very strong cross winds which will negatively affect range. These numbers compare to 432 Wh/mi overall prior...

How I Carry a Spare When Off-road Adventuring -- Mounted to Underside of Bed Rack

Carrying a spare when taking challenging off-road trips is important in case of a major tire failure and having to call for recovery assuming a recovery service is available. My solution for carrying a spare has evolved over the past year from carrying it in the vault to strapping it to a rack...

    Solar Charging the Truck

I repeated a test I did last year charging with my iGen4500DF generator, but to the Cybertruck instead of the Model Y. I charged using a Gen 2 mobile connector at 24A/119V. Using an accurate scale, I measured how much propane was used to add 2 kWh to the truck's battery. The outside air...

    Solar Charging the Truck

I know you will agree that one has to decide on an approach that makes sense in a given situation for a given need. There is no one best solution to providing electrical power away from home. Camping a few dozen miles from a reasonably sized town is different than camping 100 miles from...

Urander bed rack and OEM light bar compatibility.

Thanks. I'm also thinking about an overhead lift to pull the rack, tent, and solar panel from the truck when not need. I agree, though, that the rack makes the truck look great.

    Solar Charging the Truck

I looked into the EcoFlow Delta Pro 3. It's a capable power source, and I like EcoFlow products (I have two). I took a pass on the Pro 3 for range extending these reasons: 1) Cost $3100. Since I have solar and battery backup at my home already that's a lot to spend for backup power for...

Urander bed rack and OEM light bar compatibility.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Does the OEM light bar have to be installed by a SC?

Urander bed rack and OEM light bar compatibility.

How difficult would it be to install the OEM lightbar if the Urander bed rack is already installed?

    Solar Charging the Truck

I have done the same. I used a 420W REC solar panel charging a 2580Wh LFP battery with a Renogy 20W Rover charge controller. I charge my CT using a 1000W inverter at 8A. The battery is constantly being charged from the panel as the truck is being charged. Even on a good sunny day, however...

    Poor Level 1 charging efficiency

Yes, that's true. At the end of the charge the battery temperature rose to 27 deg C. Add to that the AC to DC conversion inefficiency. Lowering the charging rate to 8A (1000W), I measured an efficiency of only 36%. I doubt that when the truck is at rest the computers draw 400W. If that were...

    Poor Level 1 charging efficiency

Off-road adventure in an all electric vehicle can be risky. Having a portable fossil fuel generator or solar generator can ease the anxiety of running out of battery miles from the nearest charging station. Understanding what constitutes a viable range extending power source is important, and...

    Urander Installation

I've added a 420W REC solar panel (41" x 73") to the roof of my Inspired Overland Carbonlite rooftop tent. With the tent open and the truck facing into the sun with clear skies, I was generating 400W of electrical energy stored in a 2.5 kWh capacity battery. The solar electronics (two...

    Urander Installation

Here's the Inspired Overland Carbonlite roof top tent installed on top of the Urander bed rack. The 80 lb tent is attached with four brackets making it relatively easy to remove. No problem passing through the 7' garage door. I also installed Inspired's carbon fiber crossbar kit to which I...

    Urander Installation

I installed my new Urander bed rack yesterday. I had fun assembling it , and everything worked out well. I got some complements from neighbors on the look. It took the whole day from morning to evening to install it. I only needed help when it came to lifting the crossbar assembly onto the...
