No, you only need existing Gateways/PowerWall/Solar system from Tesla. I use it all the time time, have minimum set at 50%, then up to 80% on extra solar - love it.

Software isn't perfect, and sometimes depending on hardware statuses etc. messes up. At least it was your truck updating versus something that was life and death. Heck, bad software in CT scanners back in the day fried a number of folks internally until they found it was a software bug.
