This is a persistent issue in the rain for me. I tried the lens cover you mention and then just took it off- I didn't see any improvement. The placement of the camera just means it rapidly gets obscured in rain, wet roads, snow. Sounds like some vehicles have effective ways of rinsing the lens...
I tried again to see if I could swap the V2 for V3. It turns out that this was a total lie in their posting. Now they say you can't return it unless there is something wrong with it. Here is the reply I received:

Like others, I have had no problems at all with reliability. I have had to go to the shop rarely- once I tore off part of the plastic trim, so it was just cosmetic, and once to pick up my CyberTent. It has been a great vehicle and everything works.
I bought one 6 months ago and I love it. I just leave it on and don't worry about it. It looks great and I hang a bike over the tailgate to transport it to trails.
My passenger side rear cover has popped off twice, and it happened when bumping a small curb at the exit to my parking garage, which was barely noticeable. Just the right nudge and this one comes off cleanly. Obviously trying to avoid this curb that seems exactly the right height to pop it off.

I’m not sure the tonneau is designed to take much pressure, so we didn’t want to test that. We did partially close it but not up against the kayaks.
