Hello. CT will not be only my first truck, it will be my first non small vehicle.
I never had a 4x4 and I don't plan on doing any crazy ass rock climbing. But would a dual motor be equivalent to a 4x4? or an AWD SUV?
Or would the quad motor be more of an equivalent 4x4?

Would the dual motor be more than sufficient for heavy snow, ice, mud driving?

Its really the best of both worlds concering the awd vs 4x4. The control the car has over each wheel is insane. Far beyond any ICE systems 4WD or 4X4.

From what I know the RWD Tesla's do alright in the snow and ice.. better than some 4wd ICE vehicles. But the Dual motors version is supposed to be significantly better than any other AWD system.

These guys generally do a nice job when they're not making click-bait videos. I enjoyed this stress test on the Model Y dual motor traction control. Gives a good indication. Definitely better than a 4x4 ICE setup (like my truck) but not sure how it compares to an ICE AWD.

I assume, ignorantly, that a 4-motor setup will be even better.

Don't have any knowledge of mechanics of 4WD, just an enthusiast having owned a WW2 ex-military jeep and the modern Wrangler.

A more knowledgeable friend said the Cybertruck will be a better 4wd equivalent because the power is channeled directly into all wheels and the torque availability right on the start when you step on the acceleration pedal.

If my friend is not right, I invite corrections and clarifications. He is a mechanical engineer but not a 4wd enthusiast and therefore, his knowledge could be theoretical.

My daughter's Model X though handles very well in deep snow.

If you aren’t planning on serious off-roading, you will almost certainly never be disappointed with the Cybertruck’s AWD. My Model Y has amazing traction under pretty much any conditions. I suspect it’ll be fantastic for off-roading as well but that remains to be seen.

In addition to that video, here is another channel that has subs multiple tests with dual motor Model 3 and Y, along with a bunch of other vehicles. There are multiple videos where they show results side by side, like these two:

And

Those were for Model 3,v which doesn't have an Off-road mode like Model Y.

If your concern is for snow and mud but otherwise normal driving condition ranges, the ground clearance and dual motor AWD will be more than adequate. Tesla is very big on handling terrain and conditions and has demonstrated, such as with the Moose test, better control than many vehicles. I still think that 4-wheel independent drive train (i.e.,quad) is overkill for most people.

For actual off road vs standard 4x4 in say a F-150 my guestimate would be about on par between the two.

With the 4x4 the transfer case locks the front and rear axles together so both drive shafts run at the same speed no matter what (one of the main differences in my book between 4x4 and awd). When a tire on one axle or the other looses traction and starts to spin all of the power from the engine goes to the other axle.

While in the Cyber each axle is independently powered power is adjusted via software. When a tire on one axle looses traction only the power that is going to the non slipping axle is applied until the software figures it out and increases the power to the non slipping motor.

The process should be quick but can take a few seconds at the worst. It will definitely depend on how well the software is written.

For the average user it will be more than adequate.

Cybertruck Dual motor is not equivalent to ICE 4X4 but it would drive and handle similarly in normal situations. Both have power distribution through differentials just the Cybertruck is quicker and performs entirely different than 4X4 due to Cybertruck rigid skate platform .vs. ICE articulating straight axels. See Note: below.

Cybertruck Dual motor is equivalent to SUV AWD but its EV motor torque puts it in a class above ICE AWD in normal situations. Quicker, more nimble in your hands Cybertruck will be more precise to drive on pavé and off road. All the electronic traction controls an SUV AWD, Cybertruck will have and more. See Note: below.

Quad Cybertruck? No one knows. Quad is a big question mark! 4X4 trucks have articulation and Cybertruck has IFS/IRS 4-wheel powered depending. See Note: below.

Note: Cybertruck uses dynamic suspension that is not in production, hasn’t been tested and no one here has driven the Cybertruck that Tesla’s releasing to the public in a month or so…

Quad Cybertruck is the physical portmanteau twin of the CyberQuad that no one saw coming. Its meant to be a surprise. It is. No one has unwrapped what Quad Cybertruck Tesla is selling. Here’s to hoping its worth the wait…
