A radio station in Alabama was forced to go silent after thieves stole its 200-foot radio tower and other equipment from a building.

The station, WJLX, sent a landscaping crew to the site Friday morning for spring cleaning, only to find the 200-foot radio tower gone. When a crew member called the station’s general manager to break the news, he was in disbelief.

“What do you mean the tower is gone? Are you sure you’re in the right place? I actually used more colorful words than that,” Brett Elmore recounted to NBC News. “He said there’s wires all over the ground and the tower is gone.”

Surveillance cameras and security monitoring would have been a good investment for a small station's antenna site being unattended like that, as is many antenna farms.

I'll admit the thieves may have chosen such a site knowing there would be no listeners to notice it right away since it was probably off air during nighttime hours unlike larger radio stations. Likely few or no listeners in the daytime either, which is evidenced by only the employees discovering it missing later.

Many towers are used for multiple antennas besides AM, but thieves likely knew this one was not. Otherwise service disruption would've alerted everyone sooner. Security system would've been much cheaper than a tower.
