My buddy did his and is going to do mine this week. Vinyl from VVivid at Amazon is about 500 bucks, another 30 for an install kit with tools. He said with all the straight panels it is not hard. He is a construction expert so his ability to work with tools is far bettter than mine.

For sure DIY-able, just did ours by buying a roll of 3M 2080. I did a timelapse that I need to edit together, but a few learnings:

  • You need a big giant table (i.e. 12x8), OR, pre-cut pieces. I paid about $700 for a roll of 3M 2080 (M26 - matte green). Given the pre-cut kits are going for about double, I'd still say go for the pre-cut kits if you want to save time & frustration.
  • Only a madman would try doing it in a non-air-conditioned garage, unless you live somewhere particularly temperate. Texas ain't that.
  • Try to get a spare piece if you go the pre-cut route. You learn a lot from the first piece, no matter how many YT's you've watched. Needless to say, I ended up replacing my first piece at the end, once I knew I had the material to do it
  • Only a madman, or their wife, would buy a ball launcher for the dogs the same time as a vinyl wrap project is starting. Ask me how I know.
Having the right tools, especially if you're cutting your own, is vital. Don't skimp on cheap crap, especially the knives.

Cyberwraps for my job
Very happy with the result.
The truck is orthagonal and the film is perfectly precut. So the distal alignment is predictable and so happily it's a safe investment.

Given self wrapping takes 20 hours and if you were to turn that into an hourly rate for yourself, and then you'd still have to buy the materials, the tools, and all of the items that go along such as table, stool, AC for garage etc along with the hours of watching the videos carefully and making mistakes along the way, maybe it is actually worth it to get it done professionally. And most DIY instructions are about vinyl wraps. Seems like PPFs are much more difficult.

I've seen DIY kits and I've been watching videos about this topic. Seems like it's not impossible but most panels are easy except a few portions of the car that might be a little harder. Has anyone with zero experience done it here? It also looks quite time-consuming so I was just wondering if it turned out to be worth it. If I could do it myself, I'd switch colors from time to time whereas with an installer, I'd probably rarely switch colors. Maybe once every few years.

I assume vinyl is much easier than PPF and probably not recommended to DIY the latter.
With installation about $3000-$3500, maybe we should take the risk to do it ourselves.

DIY PPF isn't that hard. I've put PPF on the front end of every car I've owned over the last 10 years and finished my Cybertruck last weekend. The Cybertruck was much easier than doing a front bumper with a bunch of curves. Set aside at least two days to do it. Ideally, you want an enclosed space, like a garage, but it's possible to do a good job if that is not available. Contamination is your enemy. Make sure everything is clean. Tires, wheel wells, etc. You might need an extra pair of hands to peel back the larger rear corner panels, and to place them. The Tesbro kit and videos are better, but the actual PPF pieces are fine either way.
