Ok, so my knees aren't what they were in my 20's. I was taught that if you can put your knee there, you can put your foot there. But my days of bouldering are long gone. I now have trouble getting into the bed easily. Yes even in 'entry' mode. Had the same problem in my old Tundra too. So. I saw somewhere, probably on this forum someone built grab handles that mounted to the rack mount at the rear. I think they were carbon fiber, or 3d printed, or both. Problem is i have a roof rack. its not the OEM one, but i think in some ways this one is superior.
Got it from @RPM TESLA so kudos guys. it has 4 different length rails, rather than telescoping ones. The front one has my marker lights, tail lights, and deer whistles. I chose to remove the 4th rail as it blocks the use of the bed and i can't open the door of my fridge. I still keep the rail with me in the bed, so if I need it, its handy. only takes about 2 minutes and one tool to remount it, as i leave the roof mounts on and only take the rail. This leaves a good mounting point for a grab handle. I thought out several designs and finally simplified things. what i came up with is a motorcycle footpeg mounted to the inside of the roof brackets. it doesn't interfere with the rail if i want it on, and it stows facing forward, for minimal wind resistance.
I wouldn't say it was super sturdy, after all it's just a roof mount, but it seems to be all i need, just a little grab and pull to get me started. Anyhow, thought I'd share, as there could be someone in the same boat, err, truck, err, truck that floats?
