Non-woven pads, also known as "little scrubbies" come in two categories. A typical Scotchbrite pad has abrasives bonded to it, some are just the non-woven pad without abrasives. When doing simple cleaning, you always want to use the kind without abrasives so you don't impart a different scratch pattern.

You use a non-woven pad with abrasives to get scratches out but it does that by applying new scratches in a random pattern that gives the appearance you want. A 6" round, non-woven pad with abrasives of the right size on a random orbit sander can do that, it's nearly impossible to do it by hand, at least I don't know anyone who can. The random orbit sander can do it. Proper grit range is 400-800 grit if you want to maintain the factory appearance. These are often graded "fine" or "very fine" depending upon the manufacturer.
