I was certainly confused when the CT stopped in the left lane of the freeway to make a U-turn. I was just enjoying the FSD, looking around. Turns out the Navigation AI wanted to send me down a dirt road "short cut" that wound through the desert and across some canals. I managed to take a phone photo, once I figured out what was happening. This was in California, heading south on 395 near Olancha.

I am pretty curious how a 50 year old freeway got confused with non-existing roads in the navigational data base.

Maybe you have some good examples too?

The answer to this is obvious... It just wanted you to have some fun and show you her natural environment.

About a decade ago Google Maps did this to me. I was driving and told to take a "road" that ended up being a tractor path through a cow pasture. My vehicle could handle it, so I just went with it for fun. I probably would've done the same with the CT here.

I think these "navigational" errors are the fault of Google Maps. I had one recently that wanted to drive me into an adjacent business with a private gated parking lot, park there, and then shortcut through the woods to get to my destination, which has its own parking lot. Dumb.

The blue route depicted below is the incorrect Google Maps route sent to my CT (the picture below is from Goggle Maps off on my pc) and the magenta highlight route I added and is what the correct route should be.

BTW, I reported this error to Google a couple of weeks ago, but nothing has been corrected.

The saying, trust but verify comes to mind.

If I understood correctly TOM TOM is the actual navigation system with google maps being shown on the screen..
Oddly I saw a Tom Tom mapping vehicle in my little city. I wasn't aware Tom Tom was still a thing.

I actually had the same kind of thing happen to us on the way back from Vegas... Somewhere out there it told me to get off the I-15 south and take an old road (which turned to gravel) and went WAY out of the way... BUT, it ended up saving us about 30 minutes drive time because there had been a fatal accident about 10 miles ahead of us on I-15 (didn't know what the traffic was all about at the time) and even though it probably added about 15-20 minutes to our 'normal' drive, it saved us time in the long run... AND it was a blast too!! This was just a few months after getting my Model Y... It handled the 'off road' really well...
