I think the real story is that one of the candidates for the Liberal leadership made a statement that Canada “should” also do this.

Not sure where that rhetoric turned into “Canada plans to…”.

The federal government's tax credit made the Cybertruck cheaper. But now the federal government's tariffs could have the opposite effect (unless Tesla manages to get an exemption). From a paywalled story at the NY Times:

Duties of 25 percent on steel and aluminum will flow through to car buyers, beer drinkers, home builders, oil drillers and other users of metal goods. ...

While much of the steel that auto manufacturers use is produced in the United States, those companies and their suppliers also depend on specialized alloys that are available only from overseas producers. Virtually all automakers would be affected, including Tesla, which in 2023 petitioned for an exemption to tariffs. The company told officials it needed steel available only from abroad, reportedly for the Cybertruck, which has a stainless steel body.

CyberBeast lease prices remained the same as before.

Lease rates are very sensitive to interest rates and residual value projections. Tesla probably used this opportunity to adjust the cost difference between the Dual Motor and the CyberBeast (maybe the residual value estimations changed between the two).

An automaker can also lower lease rates if their projections of end-of-lease residual value goes up.
