Out in the countryside last weekend a crazy shouted a vulgarity out the window when they saw me walking from the Cybertruck along with my family including young kids. I shouted back "have a great day!"

Kill them with kindness.
... when there are witnesses.

It’s funny, when all this was happening there were people who would say to me “are you really going to chauffeur your kids around in that thing despite all these public reactions?”Implicitly, what kind of dad are you?
My children watched me tolerate those transient middle fingers for a little while and stick to my guns. In some sense I’m grateful for that because it provided me an opportunity to show them how strong people should behave and that’s a much more powerful lesson than anything I could describe to them.

For sure a learning opportunity! 🙋🏻‍♂️
Now they know through actions not words that you don’t bow down to stupidity and you don’t change your ways to seek approval from others. They also know you don’t respond to hatred with your own hatred because two wrongs genuinely don’t make a right. It gave us real world opportunities to talk about that organically.
Imagine what they would have learned if I yelled at those middle finger wielding assholes chasing them down the street, became obsessed with either hiding from them or persecuting them, sold the Cybertruck and bought a rivian instead?
Which of those would have made me a worse dad?

In short, get it. You'll love it and I doubt you'll experience a lot of negativity.

I live in the Boston area (so a super liberal area and state) and have had 2 negative reactions in the last 3 months. 99% of the time, there's no reaction. The other 1% of the time is positive, especially from kids.

This pas weekend, my city had a Halloween parade so we parked my truck near the parade route. A ton of people walked by the truck to get to the parade, any reactions we had were positive. There was a 4 year old girl walking with her family and pointing at the truck saying, "That car can drive itself!" She was super excited to see the truck...and honestly I was surprised a 4 year old knew about FSD. lol

I live in the Bay Area, have had my truck since 7/2024...so I have experienced a varying amount of reactions. When Elon was running D.O.G.E I was getting some crazy crazy people. I had a woman stop right next to me on the freeway, in an exit lane, just to express her dismay with my truck. She blocked me from getting onto the exit ramp and then took out her phone to record me as if i was doing something wrong. She was flipping me off and yelling something through the window. I lowered my window and just said "using your phone while driving is illegal, stupid... Get a Tesla, it records while driving." She was none too happy, but pretty sure she bought a Tesla shortly after.

This all said, I feel like the climate has cooled down quite a bit. Lately, I have had nothing but the usual sentry mode catching people taking photos next to my truck. In the end, gotta do what you want. I love my truck! They are the ones who are wrong, not us.

99% of the reactions I get are positive. Kids love the Cybertruck! I get a lot of general EV questions from adults. People are curious to see the inside of the cab and vault.

Most of the times I drive it, I don't notice any attention from it. I'm just living my life and enjoying the most awesome truck there is.

Living in Pittsburgh, I have similar experiences to others. Kids love it, it gets more looks than my red 370Z Nismo. Adults are mostly neutral/intrigued with the small minority (maybe 5-7 people in 1000 miles of driving) being negative.

Notable negatives interactions:
  • 19 year old lookin string bean wearing cheap aviators just flipping the bird from his F150 driving in the opposing lane in the suburbs. Very cool, very tough.
  • shoulder length unwashed hair neckbeard in a crusty silver mid-00's Nissan Altima honking from 3-4 car lengths down the street I'm trying to turn onto to take my daughter to daycare. He leaned across his passenger to give me a shaking middle finger while driving past. What a nutter.
Some people think it's fine to be disrespectful and rude to strangers in public. These people are losers.

I took a trip from just south of the Canadian border on 1-5 to Anaheim to visit the mouse with the family this summer. I only got one rude gesture from a tourist walking on the golden gate bridge. Nothing else at all. I get more rude gestures from people in my home county than anywhere else I've been.

People on both sides of the political spectrum view the Cybertruck as breaking ranks and will try to knock you back in line.

It's an interesting mix I think about a lot, particularly when some small part of me has to acknowledge that the truck arguable comes with a statement which I enjoy helping to make.

My middle school daughter in the passenger seat has gotten to witness a few middle fingers as we cruised around. I've seen some more though, in fairness, a couple of those might have been due to my driving rather than the vehicle.

But far and away, three things have stood out:

1. The kids universally love it, gawk, point, etc.
2. 80 - 90% of the reaction I get is positive, with people wanting to see the inside, the bed, the frunk, etc. They want to ask questions about it, get a picture with it, etc. One guy was mentioning how his son was nuts about them, so we took a picture of him in my truck to show his kid. Very fun and a nice side benefit of ownership.
3. I get way more of this than I would have thought / planned on, so sentry mode is constantly on:
