It's been a long time coming, but we've finally got the mesh grille for radiator protection from EVBase shipping. I recently received a unit to install and review, video below. First impressions:
- I've had a similar mesh grille from EVBase on my Rivian R1S for over six months, it's kept out a fair amount of leaves and debris which is great because I'm not sure how I'd get in there to clean junk out. No rips, tears, cracks or other issues to report and my Rivian is parked outside year round so it's been through a very cold winter and hot summer here in NJ.
- Super easy to install, you could probably do it in under a minute
- Installation is primarily snap fit with built in plastic clips, there is also pre-mounted double-sided tape for the areas around the front recovery points (if you have them, sorry $59K Cybertruck)
- color/look/feel matches the truck - can't even tell that it's there
- in terms of protection, I like the mesh which should keep out bugs, seeds, leaves, rocks, twigs and other debris that can otherwise accumulate. It's theoretically possible to clean the Cybertruck radiator yourself, but note the shutters are closed when parked so I'm guessing you're taking off the front bumper cap to gain access. Have fun with that. I find something like this is super convenient and will prevent rocks and debris from entering and/or puncturing the radiator.
- it's a mesh grille, so it will block some airflow. However, similar grilles have been used on 911's and other vehicles for decades without issue. If you're regularly running laps in a desert at 120 degrees F then you might want to remove this before the laps for optimal cooling. For the rest of us suburban warriors and trail runners, this is a quick, convenient and inexpensive way to prevent debris from clogging or penetrating your radiator.
Finally, even if I hadn't been provided a review unit I would purchase this myself.
If you want, you use my handle CARSLY to take some money off this mesh grille or anything else at EVBase.
