So what is it about the Cybertruck specifically that rubs people the wrong way?
TikTok.

Brain Rot.

There is a targeted campaign against Tesla an and Musk Inc. Very well funded by both foreign and domestic miscreants.

I saw a cool CT with a matte black wrap at the car wash on Sunday morning.

Then I looked a bit closer and noticed not one, but two stickers on the tailgate that said “I bought this before Elon went crazy”

Talk about the ultimate irony. The CT wouldn’t exist without EM and his particular type of crazy that lands rockets on floating drone barges, catches rockets with chopsticks, allows the paralyzed to play video games, builds millions of ever more advanced EVs, protects free speech, creates an insanely good AI from dust and on and on.

And if the CT is viewed as the embodiment of all of that crazy, so be it, I’m all in.

Smile and wave.

I always liked Steve Jobs’ quote:

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

The pricing thing was a huge miss. Yes I know Tesla is a business and needs to turn a profit. I’m just speaking to the psychological element.

To start, even just take a look at who got early access to trucks. Essentially, rich celebrities. That alone started the “ain’t no real truck” BS.

Of the 2 million pre-orders I would imagine a large portion were aspirational even at the initially estimated prices in 2019.

The increase at launch pissed people off enough. Remember, at launch they weren’t talking about foundation…

So when people got their pre-order configure now email, the $20,000 on top of the higher price I believe created a whole crop of super-detractors. People who originally put down a deposit but now hate the CT with all their being.

Alternate universe…

Initial influencers that got their hands on the vehicle are tough, truck using types. Not Hollywood stars.

Launch foundation at 79k plus tax incentive. Make it known that the foundation markup is only $5000 (make me something to strive for rather than something to wait out).

That also makes it known that depreciation won’t be significant.

Take rate would’ve been like 5x on preorders. “Shit, this seems like the better deal and I may have to wait over a year to get my hands on the next version”

Then for those who missed foundation, have a separate kind of offer for the next day 6 months (maybe it’s 1 year supercharging). Goal of not alienating foundation buyers, but also showing a little something for those late to the party.

I continue to believe the alienation on pricing from the broader population, but more importantly to the millions of initial deposits is the catalyst for the hate, which then spiraled.
