I will miss the stalks. I will really miss a central speedometer.

Neither Is a deal-breaker. Tesla defies conventional thinking, and I’ve accepted the ecosystem that I’m buying into.

Yeah I dunno. Transitions are hard. I get the concept of "all user input is error", but that only works "if" the system that replaces it doesn't throw up all of it's own errors, and by doing so makes the experience worse overall.

The only saving grace with the stalk removal is the auto indicator function you can enable on the Teslas. It knows when to turn the indicators off after a corner or lane change. Made things much easier because the indicators became a one touch affair, and it doesn't matter how long the manoeuvre takes it will turn it off exactly right.

But otherwise we live in a "tactile world" and screens have to be the least tactile way to react and respond to our environment, or control equipment.

The killer for me will be the removal of the gear stalk, which also doubles as the autosteer cruise. For off-roading, there's no way that screen swipe thing will be useful, or responsive enough to work. Let alone if you are bogged, and have dirty hands, people will be complaining big time because it simply won't work.

If they have buttons anyway, under the screen or mirror, why not expose them in such a way that people can choose, without it being inconvenient? You have the cost anyway, so why try to hide it or make it impractical. Makes no sense.

I’ll make the assertion that there should be no response time difference between the two. The stalk, while a mechanical switch, drives the software that makes the change. The screen action swipe, drives the exact same code to accomplish the exact same actions. And the human action of moving the stalk or swiping the screen should take the same time. We’re not talking about a feature that’s buried 3 levels down in the UI.

If we were going from an old completely mechanical transmission, and trying to add automation to move the lever for you, than I could see the time delta.

I don't have a problem the reaction time of the screen in comparison to the stalk, I have an issue with hitting the right part of the screen, and swiping it properly, in order to switch directions whilst in motion over bumpy terrain, let alone trying to rock it back and forwards whilst needing both hand on the wheel to steer.

The other problem is the gear selector only shows on the screen when you are stationary, which defeats the purpose of using the momentum of rocking backwards and forwards to free yourself. Sure on-road you can have it auto detect for direction, but that doesn't help to steer and rock between boulders to get through. Same in sand.

The other point is that the buttons for shifting direction are there anyway, so why make them poorly accessible to save on a stalk? I'd rather have a stalk than lots of buttons like the Plaid.
