This might be a silly question but why would I hang a bicycle wheel over the back tailgate as opposed to just placing the entire bike inside the bed?

Keeps multiple bikes upright and not in a mess in the bed. Can still use bed. Not a big deal with one bike. Try five.

Ok thanks! I am not skilled enough to ride 5 bikes at one time. ?? Don't they make bike racks for the trailer hitch? Is a tailgate pad something people have been asking for? I've never seen one on any other truck.

It’s common around downhill friendly mountains. Take your family to the lifts and whatnot. Trailer hitch bike racks make the departure angle poor and extend the length of the truck longer than it already is. And require taking it on and off all the time.
