Yesterday, my truck decided to engage the emergency breaks startling everyone inside and potentially causing an accident if there was anyone behind me. All for a Mcdonalds paper bag. I wasn't even in FSD... The truck could have easily cleared over the paper bag.

It's really reckless of Tesla to put such a potentially dangerous software in the wild (2025.45.6).

Is there a way to dial the emergency breaking down without disabling it entirely? Until Tesla can distinguish paper bags from real road obstacles at least

You can adjust how reactive it is in the safety menu, changing it from early to late or off
I think that’s just for the audible beeping notification, not the actual auto-braking behavior.

So, out of an abundance of caution, FSD decided to brake hard to avoid a collision with an object in the road ... and your conclusion is that it's unsafe and someone "could have" hit you if they were following you too closely?

bruh.

Yesterday cruising down some back roads about 45 mph there was a wind gust and kicked up some tree leafs out the ditch and sure enough truck was trying to stop for them. Was on FSD but At least I know it’s working.

Out of abundance of caution? LOL! Also it wasn’t on FSD. This is called releasing dangerous software too early without enough testing… I can somewhat understand it if I was on FSD but to be in manual mode where I’m in charge and it slams on the breaks because of a bag… ridiculous!

Did you capture video of the incident to share with the rest of the class?

Problem is, in the past it would smash right through hay bales and truck tires.
Waiting for the middle ground where it doesn't get me rear-ended by an 18wheeler because a walmart bag blows into the lane, and at the same time doesn't plow right through a 90lb semi tire laying in the road.

This is the bag that my truck so bravely saved me from!!!

Your description of this even makes it seem overly dramatic compared to what I saw here, IMO.

From your trucks perspective, it probably decided that looked like a rock or other battery piercing object in the roadway. Maybe you haven't considered this, but FSD has so much video out there that it has seen quite a few "just a paper bag" footage to warrant a hard stop. Road hazards trick human drivers all the time. With FSD sensing no other vehicles around you, it decided to stop. You should be grateful that this software is sensitive enough to want to protect you from unknown objects.

By the way, you should update your firmware so we can view the added real time telemetry.

Appreciate the comment but I think you are giving FSD a bit too much credit here… also I wasn’t on FSD as I mentioned so why does FSD behavior apply?

I can see the telemetry on the app so I’m on the latest version but when you download a 30 second
Clip from the phone app it doesn’t save those.

The FSD model is running at all times, but not all features are allowed to control the car. Only when you "engage" FSD does it assume complete control.

So that means your emergency braking event was actually carried out by FSD. It just happen to override your parallel input.
