Driving non-FS from Toronto to Orlando.. what accessories to buy for the trip?

Hi All,

I’m feeling a little adventurous with my Cybertruck and since we have a code freeze at work, I’m pretty much off for 16 days until the new year.

Just wanted to point out that this is my first EV and I’ve done a crap ton of research on charging and where to stay along the way.. so I’m alright in that sense.

my questions really are about what accessories do you all recommend having for a long road trip? Also to note, I’ve got a 6 year old boy a 4 year old daughter in the backseat.

I guess anything you all think would be helpful to have on this trip for the car?

I drive Ottawa/Toronto to Tampa 12-18 times (round trip) per year in Teslas. X, then S, now Cybertruck. I have also driven the routes many times in ICE cars/trucks. Tesla is, hands down, my preferred vehicle. I have had and use FSD on each Tesla and it is truly fantastic for such a long trip. That alone smashes any comparison between a Tesla and any other option.

The accessory that I would strongly recommend for the Cybertruck (because the built-in chargers absolutely suck) is an eye-level charging mount for the Tesla screen or dashboard. I have the MagBak one and it works very well. That will also allow you to keep your eyes on the road if you need to see something on your phone.

Unless I am travelling with our dogs, I do the trip in two, 15 hour days. I take leisurely dinner breaks and stop whenever I need a stretch, so I'm not going to pretend that I do the trip as efficiently as one might.

I almost always let the Tesla recommend the charging stops and I have noticed that it has improved its recommendations substantially (now more aggressively favouring 250 KW chargers). Trust in Tesla!

I now have a couple of places that I know to stay and aim for those hotels each time, but for the longest time when I would start to feel like I had only a couple of hours left in me I would use the Marriott or IHG app on my phone, and compare that to Telsa's charging navigation, pin down a hotel destination, book it, and call it a night. With little kids, I would recommend that you just decide in advance where you want to aim for and book-in, because it's surprising how booked up hotels can get in certain otherwise nondescript areas because of events like college football games or some such thing that you will have no way of predicting. Check in advance! In any case, you'll want to keep in mind that wherever you stay has to be within the range of your next Supercharger (or have destination charging, but that's the holy grail).
