I took a couple kayaks to northern Minnesota and had to leave the tailgate up so I could get good visibility with the camera. I didn't like the limited view with the rear-view mirror for a three-hour drive. These are 10 1/2 foot kayaks and it hauled like a dream.

I really want a tailgate modification flip out that allows 8 foot lengths to be laid flat.
An 8' sheet will lay flat with the tailgate down and not stick out- until you get 6 or 8 inches high... Pic of 8' 2x6's...

As mentioned, 8' sheets fit great with the tailgate down. I just left the vault open so I could use the mirror.

Absolutely do it like this and tie down with straps. Not tailgate up with tonneau holding in place. Foam is trickier but still tie down with straps. A camera on the end of the CT tailgate would work to maintain the backup camera.

I almost hauled like that but I was worried some would slide out on me while taking off from a light but I had like a 25mi drive. So I just propped them up on top of the tail gate and snugged down the tonneau on them.
