I drove to a different country to test drive a Cyberbeast and promptly cancelled my order

Hi @JonS, I have one question to ask you, what was the VIN range of the turo CB you test drove? From what you are describing it sounds like it might be an early VIN, not sure when test drives are opening up in Canada but the fact that you are reviewing basically a rental CB tells me that it might of been prone to some of the issues you are mentioning due to that and an early VIN. Hopefully you get a chance to test drive another unit, I know wind noise has been attributed to faulty windshield seals. I just finished a round trip towing a trailer from Cali to Vancouver BC and had none of the issues mentioned in a AWD, hopefully you get a chance to test drive another in the future. BTW LOVE Canada, all of the Tesla owners and just people in general were super nice :)

  • Efficiency – my F150 Lightning Platinum has better range in the summer than the Cybertruck ...
Range is not the same as efficiency. How can you judge an EV vehicle when you don't even know the difference?

Tesla is known for its highly efficient vehicles. My plugin hybrid Lexus NX450H+ costs more to drive per mile than a Tesla Model Y. I doubt very much that Ford even comes close. Post some data to prove me wrong.

I’ve been in a lot of EVs as per the post. I can say based on my experience that the CT cabin has the most wind/road noise of them all. This is excluding the rattles and squeaks.

As I mentioned I find it actually a weird regression in cabin noise over the other Tesla models.

Obviously it could have just been this example but it only had 18k Kms on it so I find it hard to believe.
I am not sure comparing a Turo rental Cybertruck with 18 Km is a fair comparison.

Specialty vehicles ( sports cars, Ford Raptor, Cybertruck) on rental services are often abused.
Marcus Brownlee also had a bad experience with his first Cybertruck review because of previous usage.

Noise, creaks, squeaks and rattles will appear earlier than single owner/driver vehicle.

Whitlin-Diesel or Whitlin-Diesel's cousin might have used that Turo'ed Cybertruck before you got it.

So you're not an owner or interested in becoming an owner, why are you here? Just to let us know? Okay, thanks

Also, your post doesn't match my (and most others) reality. Truck is great and fun to own, no problems.

Unfortunately I didn't get the VIN but you are right, reviewing a rental vehicle could mean it's had a hard life and may not show the best. I heard about the front motors being replaced for early VINs but hadn't heard about the windshield seals, good to know they may be able to remediate some of the wind noise for people.

Glad you had a nice trip to Canada! :)

As I mentioned in my post I love my Model S Plaid and I'm a fan of cars in general. I've been reading this forum daily while I waited for my invitation to order. I wanted to post the review to add to the discussion and give others my perspective after an extended test drive.

I'm also a Tesla shareholder, believe in their mission and want to see them succeed.

Totally fair point, it may have had a hard 18k kms and may not show best. Hopefully everyone takes this into account when reading my review. Much to some people's dismay I included as much information as I could. I would say many of the rattles and squeaks were identified in other long term reviews (such as Out of Spec), but they may have been remediated now... I can only speak to my experience here. The giga wiper twitching at highway speeds was probably not due to the rental profile though, it's also not something I've seen others mention so it could be an isolated event.

Semantically you are correct. I could revise this to "Range - My F150L has better range in the summer". I agree it's probably brute forcing this because of the 130kWh battery over the 123kWh. I'm not going to be in a position to compare directly. So I agree it's somewhat subjective but I did drive both vehicles back to back on the same day for about the same distance.

I do regularly drive the F150L on a ~200mile round trip and have experienced the winter driving impact running a set of Nokian Hakkapeliittas at highway speed.

Can't really speak to wind/road/rattles/squeaks, I don't really get that unless I'm off roading. Sounds to me like you drove a weird truck. I get a rattle in the dash when hitting washboards and some wind noise when I attach my ham antenna. Otherwise, I can whisper to my wife sweet nothings from 3' away while doing 75mph on i10 (y)
I've been driving Jeep wranglers/gladiators and GMC trucks for years and years, I'll take my CT over them on wind/road/rattles/squeaks. Perhaps we just have different backgrounds, but I'm comparing a truck to trucks. You're comparing a truck to luxury sedans.

Either way, I'm not trying to change your opinion and you can have whatever opinion you wish, just giving my own.
Agreed, appreciate your perspective. As others have pointed out, this could just be a bit of an unloved example of a Cyberbeast at 18k kms. I did back to back drive the Cyberbeast and the F150 Lightning Platinum for about the same time. I'd say this is a comparable truck to meter wind, motor and road noise differences.

From others comments it sounds like there was an early issue with windshield seals and front motor whine that has been resolved.

So I guess the vast majority of us who have owned them for many months and thousands of trouble free miles are the outliers? Good to know! Selling mine now, I had no idea my truck was so bad. Thank you random poster on the Internet!

Also, my Rivian was a piece of junk, spent more time in service than on the road.

The OP is Ford plant that is shaking in his boot as the Cybertruck is better than the Lightning and any F-150 trim. The luxurious interior and massive amounts of storage can’t be touched by the Lightning. Everyone here test drove a Lightning and chose the Cybertruck for a reason.

Just say you hate Tesla OP.
I'm a massive Tesla fan, it doesn't mean that I can't be critical of their products. I had issues with my wife's refreshed Model X LR but I love my Model S Plaid. I'm also a big believer in FSD and have purchased it with all of my vehicles.

I haven't enjoyed working with Ford dealers and it's one of the reason why I'm going to sell the F150 next year -- far from a Ford plant. I also posted some short comings of the F150L in the review that I'd be happy to elaborate on if required.

I'm not sure if you have looked at the EV truck options but the Cybertruck doesn't have the most storage. F150L does have more storage and so does the Silverado EV. It may not be the most important metric for some but for others it may be important.

On the point of interior luxury... honestly please watch this video and tell me you still think it's luxury - Tesla really weren't aiming for a luxury interior with this vehicle... and that's ok.

Well we''re all just here posting our experiences buddy. My 2018 Model 3 Performance had no issues whatsoever (well the rear lights fogged up but they replaced them), the 2022 Model X was great apart from the squeaks and the 2022 Model S Plaid has been rock solid.

I genuinely hope you enjoy your truck for many miles. For others who haven't purchased yet, knowledge is power.. Particularly when you are looking at the FS premium to be at the front of the queue.

Respectfully, I can't agree with a lot of your initial impressions. After having mine for 6 months, it's been great. No build quality issues, nor rattles. In regards to the bed, the fact that you can lower it by putting it in entry mode makes it waaaay more useful than 90% of the trucks that aren't base models that sit really high off the ground, which makes loading and access much more challenging. Also makes hooking up a trailer a breeze since you can raise and lower the truck to do most of the work vs. having to cranking the trailer tongue to raise/lower.

The Steer by wire does take some getting used to. You might not have gotten to that point with your test drive. I love it now BTW!

Also, it's great not having a fragile paint coat that you need to worry about.

In regards to the frunk size, it's big enough for when I need it, but rarely use it since the bed is much more useful and is secured with the lockable cover (hence vault name). I imaging the frunk is needed more on the F150 Lightning since the bed isn't secured.

I'm glad you test drove it and realized it wasn't for you. We all don't need to like everything, and we all should have are own opinion. I too have a Model S Plaid, and although I still love it, I usually take the Cybertruck unless I have to go somewhere far (Plaid has FSD, while we're still waiting on that for the Cybertruck). Good luck with your Rivian, and glad you bought the F-150 Lightning and helped the transition to EVs!
Good point on the bed lowering. I guess the Rivian R1T with its kneel mode would be the only other comparison.

True on the insecure bed on the F150L. Most people purchase a trifold or Retrax Pro XR to add some security. I purchased the latter as I needed space to mount cross bars at the same time. The retrax is metal which feels sturdy but I found it freezes shut in the Canadian winter!

Thanks, I hope you enjoy your Cybertruck! I really want to see both Tesla and other EVs succeed and thrive.

I’ve owned a Cubertruck for 4 months now and have to say it’s one of the best vehicles I’ve driven. Some of your gripes are a bit picky but that’s fine. The F150 lariat I came from feels like a dinosaur when I drive it now. It’s tailgate also doesn’t have power close. It doesn’t have a gimmicky tailgate that doesn’t ever get used. I keep a bed cover on it like many truck owners do so that people don’t steal whatever is in it. That wipes out around a third of what you had complaints about.

As far as wind noise and quality goes - my experience has been much different than yours. Zero squeaks or rattles. Way quieter than my F150 on the highway. The tires make more noise than the wind on the highway. My steering wheel is not twitchy nor is the windshield wiper.

I won’t ever go back to daily driving a vehicle without rear wheel steering and drive by wire. It’s a complete game changer. I’m shocked your only takeaway was the steering wheel was too small without mentioning how amazing this advancement is. For what it’s worth I agree the steering wheel is definitely a bit small and I don’t love the top of it being flat. But it works extremely well and the buttons are perfectly placed for ease of use so I’m a fan.
