The 4680 in Perspective // Battery Day Refresher + Competitors?
This is a preamble to the 4680 Teardown Series to put the 4680 cell in perspective which will include a battery day refresher with new information + some brief notes on quote-unquote competitors like the BYD Blade Battery and CATL's Qilin Battery.

If you haven’t watched Jordon’s series on Battery Day, this is a great video summing up about 20 hours worth of other videos. It’s like a giant cliff’s notes version of the series.

Not much new, but a good reminder.

One thing to mention here. Tesla‘s management has said that most of their estimates on capital and operational expenses have proved out. They are reducing capex by 5x and operational expenses by some significant amount.

Just the capex savings should shave $8-10/ kWh off of cell production costs. They were less specific on how much OpeEx would be cut, but figure savings will be in the ballpark of $800 - 1000 on a Model Y. On a 500 mile Cybertruck it’s more like a $2,000 - $2,500 reduction in cell costs.

Right.

Also the comparision of Cybertruck with mega-castings to F-150 EV hundreds of extra parts did not include longterm savings of NOT having inventory of those extra parts over minimum 10-15 years, inventory management overhead over minimum 10-15 years, and parts revision/obsolescence over minimum 10-15 years.

I was most fascinated with the data on improved thermals in a tabless design. My takeaway is that heat will no longer be a factor in charging speed (up to the limit of the heat pump).

Definitely improved thermals will be less of a limiting factor.
