That is what they should have done, but will be unlikely.

Best we can hope for and demand from Tesla at this point is the fast charging they promised for both speed, and a decent charging curve.
Enough data collection at this point, let us charge these things.

I didn't see the video, but from what I've seen on here, I think some Tesla engineers chimed in and said the unused space is there for cooling or something along those lines

But it just happens to be so conveniently handy to squeeze in 15 centimeters of headroom for a 4695 cell, which multiple companies are now producing.

if this is a Wishful Thinking/speculation: I think Tesla is getting ready to launch a smaller Cybertruck. Elon said that EVs with 200 miles is sufficient as over 90% of the drive is commute-moreover, Tesla is adding Superchargers everywhere-so, road tripping is not a problem. Hence, Range Extender is irrelevant & waste.
