So the New Year rings in like it always does... shortly before midnight the gunshots and fireworks begin. I turn over in bed, ignoring them, like I always do. Par for the course out here in the country.
I'm a side sleeper and switch sides maybe a dozen times over a night. Every other switch points me towards the bedside table where the clock glows its red numerals back at me. This morning, a few hours after the midnight revelry, the clock reads 3am and I know I've got one more hour. I turn over, facing the wall.
Sometime later, upon turning sides one last time, my eyes see nothing but darkness. I'm a tiny bit surprised, since the heavy winds aren't supposed to come in for a few more hours. But we had heavy rain and thunderstorms yesterday, right at dusk, and so I'm not totally shocked. I actually bumped my usual charge limit a few ticks yesterday against that very thing.
Picking up the flashlight and my iPhone, I pad downstairs. Cold and dark.
Thirty minutes later the wife comes trundling slowly down the stairs. The living room is bright with light, and comfy from the fire now blazing cheerfully in the wood stove. The kitchen has a pot of hot coffee waiting. The refrigerator hums its usual murmur. The internet is up and working. And I've reported the outage to our local utility.
A few days ago I posted in the recent "Needs Help" thread that my wife didn't get a vote in my buying my Cybertruck. That she wasn't a fan.
Nothing quite like an unexpected gift to begin changing someone's perspective....
