I'm arranging financing outside of Tesla. On the app for the things they want before delivery they're asking for proof of payment. They want a picture of the check with check number and amount. I was approved for a loan but didn't sign it yet as I didn't have a VIN or delivery date and didn't want to be making payments on something I don't even have. Am I wrong about the order of things? Doesn't the bank give the money to Tesla for the vehicle?

I got this same thing two weeks ago. I panicked and changed my financing to Tesla finance so I could close out the “to do”. I’m still going to switch back to my credit union when I speak to the advisor once I get a VIN.
you are right though, you can’t get financing until you get a VIN and the final docs.
you don’t have to do anything and your order will not be held up or delayed.

You don’t have to pay until delivery. I picked up my physical bank check the day before my scheduled delivery appointment. Folks have reported paying before being assigned a VIN thinking it might speed up the process only to still have to wait. Make sure you have your financing lined up so when the time comes you only have to sign the loan documents.

When Tesla asked, I told them I was bringing the check to my appointment.

In other words your fine as long as all the other to do’s are completed that you can complete at this point. You can confirm with the delivery center (not service folks). The DC will confirm what I’m telling you.

I'm buying in Texas, using an out-of-state Credit Union pre-approval check. Yikes!

When prompted by my Sales Advisor, I FedEx'd the endorsed check to Tesla in CA, and emailed Tesla the tracking number as directed. My "payment" status was updated the next day. Easy peasy

Yes, they receive electronic fund transfers through a service called Plaid. A lot of folks on the forum paid through it. But they will still accept a paper bank check. I prefer to pay that way and have done so with all my Tesla vehicle purchases.

Are you currently making payments on that loan without having received the CT?

I mailed the check after getting a delivery date, and I have the truck now.

You can pay the whole thing via a bank transfer via Plaid.

I have a slightly different scenario and question. I placed my order last week and completed everything except for the initial financing application - thinking that it'll be at least a couple of months before I even get close to delivery and I don't want the financing "offer" to expire and Tesla to run my credit again. Am I correct in my rationale that I still have a ways to wait and completing the financing app later won't affect my timing? Perhaps would it be better to switch to cash then I can change back to Tesla financing once I have a VIN and it seems like delivery is within a few weeks?

"Delivery denied due to Cybertrock not being a valid vehicle" :) Pretty funny

Why, why, why has this simple task become so difficult???
The problem is, we are dealing with a ghost. My GM said he has nothing to do with the CT. All handled out of Austin. Can't Tesla CT HQ get this right??
If they give us a VIN?
We should have 2 choices
1. Electronic Funds Transfer
2. Hand someone a bank check
Not mail a check to Austin
End of story
