I don't understand. You slide the slidey thingy and it changes gear. There's no delay. In fact I've worried that I've done it while still rolling and wondered if I might damage something.
Do not worry about this, I do it every day. Hell, sometimes I don't even take my foot off of the throttle when shifting (screen). If you are going over a certain speed (5mph might be correct) it simply won't shift and you'll just keep rolling back until you fall below speed threshold. Like I said, I do this every day.

If you've never driven a full size SUV or truck, you need to go at least half way into the intersection before turning left in order to do a proper U-turn As far as swapping from D to R, it takes a bit of learning how to swipe up and down but you can actually do it before you've fully stopped. Possibly up to 5 mph like the other user stated.
Tacoma and 4Runner driver most of my life plus trailer hauling.
Perhaps I was being overly cautious on waiting for it to stop before changing direction. Something I’ll be sure to get myself (and my wife) used to with some testing when we get ours.
