Only problem there is they didn't have 800v architecture and fast DC chargers so a standard connector years ago would have to have been updated. UL(Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) not NHTSA would be helping setting the standard connector(s).NHTSA should have regulated a standard connector years ago.
We are in the nascent stage of EV's, in 10 years it will be quite different given that the rate of change will continue exponentially. Look how long it took us to get to USB-C connectors to be almost universal among electronic devices.
