SAE is Standardizing NACS Connector

https://electrek.co/2023/06/27/sae-standardizing-nacs-less-dependent-on-tesla/

SAE International today announced it will standardize the Tesla-developed North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. This will ensure that any supplier or manufacturer will be able to use, manufacture, or deploy the NACS connector on electric vehicles (EVs) and at charging stations across North America. Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Rivian, and a number of EV charging companies recently announced plans to adopt the NACS connector through adaptors or future product offerings.

SAE says they are standardizing it on an "expedited" schedule. I think since Tesla has already proven the connector in real world use over more than a decade and every conceivable environment, and thought about interoperability a lot, and published the specifications, they have already done all of the heavy lifting. All SAE needs to do is formalize it.

And they have "expedited" it so maybe it will only take several months instead of years!

They should rename NACS to "CCS3" and make all of Europe switch over
3-phase power is common in the EU, so the NACS connector isn't as useful for Level 2. They sorta are more picky about balancing their phase demand than we are, and can use less thick wire because of it. Destination charging here usually tops at 11kW but theirs is quite commonly 3x7kW or 3x11kW.

But this is good news for North America.

Good. SAE screwed up big time with electrical, communications, and especially the human factors aspects of J1772 (instead of J3068), and CCS1 instead of CCS2. Glad to see they aren't going to play it hubris/ "not invented here syndrome" style. Admit that the NACS connector is better engineered and more usable by a wider range of abilities, canonize and stabilize it, and let the industry move on.

Hopefully we can skip all this silliness with MCS and just get it right, once, the first time. I'm amused by what I see out of Atlis/NxU or whatever they are calling themselves these days, but let's not repeat the connector mess again please and thank you.

Or, use two phases and easily charge overnight at 7kw.

The phase differences have no impact on Supercharging.

Why would Europeans downgrade from a possible 22kW AC charging on a 3 phase 32 A connection to just 7kW? for them a lot of the level 2 stations in public provide a lot more power than we are used to seeing.
