I don't have kids, but I use that center tether loop thing to clip a 3ft lead to my dog's harness to keep her from launching in the event of a rapid deceleration event.

(I use the Tesla seat hammock for her, and the 3 ft lead lets her reach both side windows.)

I actually had to put 3M Velcro strips on that about 3 days into ownership because it was so loose.
