I have had my eye on all of the racks that have been announced, but so far they are all rails, and cannot be used for lumber (etc), or they are full racks (etc). I have wanted something that could work in both scenarios (a convertible rack if you will). Last night I saw the one below and it seems like a decent compromise, but would need some tweaking to make it work for the Cybertruck:

https://www.etrailer.com/Ladder-Racks/DeeZee/DZ951800.html

Its called an Invis-A-Rack and it folds down onto the bed rails when not in use. I could see something like this appealing to many with [at least] the following modifications:

- Use the Cybertruck mounts (but the covers need to be removed)
- The front clearly needs to be shorter (and how does that affect the foldability?)
- The cross members ideally would have t-slots

Has anyone used/seen one of these? They have been around long enough to have versions for many truck makes and models. Comments? Critiques?

I bet you could use that exact product you linked. With the angle of the CT sails all you would need to do is only lift the rear bar. Just jerry rig the mounting points.

Otherwise this is something you could DIY build with extruded aluminum. 80/20 is a brand, but also the most expensive. tnutz.com is way cheaper.

  • Buy 2 long pieces of for both sides: EX-3075 – 0.75″ x 3″ Smooth T-Slotted Aluminum Extrusion
  • Buy as many hinges as you need, maybe 8?: (HI-015) Steel Black Powder-Coat Heavy-Duty Hinge Kit (MEDIUM)
  • Use 15 series for the cross bars and arms.: EX-1515L-BLACK – 1.5″ x 1.5″ BLACK Light Smooth T-Slotted Aluminum Extrusion
  • Use these quick ratchet locks to attach the pieces when you need it.: (LH-015-A) 15 Series M8 Locking Ratchet Handle w/washer and Standard T-Nut

I love these standardized aluminum sets, they are like Legos for adults, and it cuts easy. As long as you design it for the weight to not be on the hinges, it will support a lot of weight. You can add extra beams to make triangles to resist the force on the load when braking and accelerating. The same design as the product you linked.

Other than the 2 long pieces attached to the sails and cross beams, everything else could fit inside the underbed storage box when not in use.

I'm making one. I'm trying to add a plate that covers the roof glass to ensure nothing tips and breaks it. Mine looks like its going to be over built though which i doubt anyone would want. Going to try to cut and weld everything using the CT outlets.

Did anyone end up going this route? I really want to do this for camping. Thought is to make a sail of sorts to cover the sides once erected then find a floorless tent/shelter to put on. I would likely not make mine as tall as the cab in front but rather use the aluminum rails to level out the bed sides so the top shelter is level.

Thoughts?
