Warren Redlich suggested that Tesla may announced an option to order specifically an Austin Model Y during or just after the earnings call today. I'm skeptical because I think many "normal" consumers would be confused by this option although you could argue that for now many people who order Tesla's are more informed. Maybe they could make it a small checkbox, or something you have to call to request. It all seems unlikely. If anything I would think they would either base it on delivery location or model. Perhaps a Plaid Model Y made in Austin?

I just ordered a Model Y Performance to lock in the cheaper FSD price but if the Austin specific order option becomes available and I cannot modify my existing order appropriately then I will most likely cancel my order and order an Austin Y. I'll lose the cheaper FSD price and have to wait longer, but knowing myself I will hate having the Y with the lesser specs.

What do you guys think? Is Warren right?

I’ve heard suggestions that a model Y plaid might be the first vehicle coming out of Austin. Just rumors nothing serious. But that seems a lot more likely than an Austin edition.

Well it would be at least $20-30k less than the Plaid Model X right? Maybe $75k? I lost track of what the performance costs, but likely $15k more than the Model Y Performance.

If it has adjustable air suspension that would be rad. Highway friendly and off-road friendly Model Y with kick ass performance would be killer.

The Model-Y enthusiasts over at TMC are tying themselves into knots trying to figure out how to ensure their order comes from Austin. They want the 4680s, the structural pack, presumably better paint, etc.

To limit the shenanigans, it would not surprise me if Tesla made a unique model designation for the first 4680 MYs, so that people could order them directly (with an appropriate markup of course).

But for 90% of buyers, they really won't notice the difference.

Yeah, it sounds like Fremont will switch to standard range with LFPs and Austin will have the 4680s. Tesla already kicked a batch of lollygaggers to the curb for delaying their orders. The question is... which models will come with the 2170s?

They also want to get those bleeding edge Model Ys using the reservation they placed 5 months ago for $5,000+ less than current selling prices.… and get the incentive money which may or may not hit.

If they make a new SKU for the new Model Ys or have the first launch be Plaids I think some heads will implode.

yeah, I'm hoping the Y gets air supension...

but wow, my build is over $70K with FSD, so another $15K would push it to $85K .

I may be one of those lollygaggers. That's fine, they can kick me to the curb when my vin gets allocated and it doesn't have an "A" for Austin. I'll forgo the $250 if need be. I'm not sure why though, they could just hand the VIN to one of those people who don't care. Why not give me a checkbox on my Tesla Y order page allowing me to choose Austin. The price is I have to wait a bit longer, maybe an extra nominal amount, enough to deter those who don't care that much. Pure profit for them, makes everyone happy.

I skimmed right over “plaid” in his post and thought, Ogre is going out on a limb to predict Model Ys from Austin, waiting until after we saw a bunch lined up outside the factory.

Then I read more carefully because his posts have been insightful. Sure enough ?

Because they don't want an Osborne Effect. They can't sit around with orders at the old price point clogging up their already stressed customer support system.

I’m pretty sure if they change the VIN you will have the opportunity to update your order and accept current pricing without losing the $250 order fee.

Another way they could do this is simply have all cars coming out of Texas be in the new colors. (Switching colors would also cause a new order and pricing reset)

Yes, but if 90% of customers don't care then Osborne shouldn't be a factor. I'm actually, in part, having a go at all the posters who ask why I care about the Austin build vs Fremont. According to them, most don't care... hmmm...

Also, by charging a nominal amount more, perhaps $1000 not sure what that number looks like and an extended delivery date perhaps, you can drive people to the older, shitty Osborne model, while keeping those drooling over the new model happy.
