Would it not be prudent for a manufacturer to run crash tests on competing manufacturers cars too? Or do they just rely on data that available to them from other sources? We know there is a lot of buying other manufacturers cars and tearing them down.
There is a reason companies like Munro & Associates exist.. Companies pay them to buy competitor vehicles and tear them down, so they don't have to.

NHTSA doesn't buy vehicles for crash testing, the manufacturers foot that bill. So i don't think manufacturers would waste their money buying other people's cars too.

ā€œDavid Friedman, … former NHTSA acting and deputy administrator, says that although the agency might leave some vehicles out, focusing on top-selling cars is a wise move, considering that it pays for the cars it crash-tests, which can cost $10 million each year.ā€

oh.. maybe i should have done some research :p welll...

Looks like we all pay for NHTSA through taxes, and we also all pay for IIHS tests through insurance: https://www.autobytel.com/what-is-the-difference-between-iihs-and-nhtsa-crash-test-programs . What a wonderful world!

I suppose Tesla has decided to do their own crash tests to ensure they pass both with flying colors. I think IIHS has some more in-depth tests, kinda like what was mentioned in those tesla videos of crashes that don't hit the door. EVs face adoption challenges already, so it is prudent to focus on safety.

and the CT in particular has 4 years of people saying ā€œit’ll never pass safety regsā€ or ā€œit’ll be dangerous to pedestriansā€ etc

so I can see a scenario where Tesla tests the everloving sh*t out of it, to arrive at a big ā€˜f you’ response

I thought Tesla says it crash tests to confirm its crash simulation software predictions…

So hopefully that means they do not need to crash as many physical cars.
