A google search of top selling cars in California in Q1 2024 brings this up:

1. Tesla Model Y - 33,467
2. Toyota RAV4 - 17,873
3. Toyota Camry - 14,062
4. Honda Civic - 12,230
5. Honda CR-V - 12,011
6. Tesla Model 3 - 11,162

It looks like the false article posted by another person in the past day indicating that Tesla was losing favor in California was wrong. Given that Tesla Model Y is by far the top selling car in CA, clearly Californians still favor Teslas. Besides the Model 3 highland did not start ramping production until later in Q1 if I am correct.


Also the article I posted indicates the following in California: "All-electric car registrations [select models] (Q1'2024):

• Tesla Model Y (33,467): #1 in Luxury Compact SUV (64.4% share)
• Tesla Model 3 (11,162): #1 in Near Luxury Cars (41.1% share)
• Tesla Model X (3,704): #2 in Luxury Mid-Size SUV (13.0% share)

You are comparing different metrics.

Both correct analysis are from the same set of data.

Tesla mode 3 dropped to number 3 in overall car sales in cali.

Tesla electric vehicles are still the top selling BEVs.

Both things can be true.

The original article is about Tesla's market shrinkage next to the overall market growth.

Toyota was the top brand in California this quarter, notching a 9.3% increase in registrations, followed by Honda, which marked an 18.6% rise so far this year. Tesla registrations have dropped in California year to date, with a 7.8% drop in the first quarter, following a 9.8% drop in the last quarter of 2023.

It's ok to be objective about numbers.

Model 3 may make a substantial come back in Q2 or Q3 due to the refreshed model 3 ramp up. There is no indicator that there is a trend in California to favor other models. But really greater EV sales are a positive to Tesla if it maintains the top positions. The new model 3 performance is less expensive that the model 3 long range due to the long range does not qualify for the $7500 tax deduction. They are going to sell a lot of those to people who qualify and can afford them.
