At AI day, Tesla went into detail about how the vehicle cameras get read, then translated into a 360-degree vector space view before getting used by FSD for further processing.

Now this makes me wonder about what views will be used for various other uses. For instance, what will be shown in the dashboard screen when backing up? Or the expected screens used as rear/side view mirrors? What will be recorded on the Teslacam videos?

I'm not really sure what I would prefer or really need for these uses. But one thing that got me thinking about this was from watching the Wham Bam Teslacam videos. Very often, the commentary in the video mentions that someone provided the Teslacam video to either the police or to an insurance company to help determine fault and/or responsibility.

I would expect that the 360-degree video would be easier to see and understand when watching these videos. However, the 360-degree video is highly processed and I can imagine a lawyer saying in court that the Teslacam footage is not really what happened because it does not show the actual raw footage from the cameras. For all the court knows, the FSD computer processing could have interpolated something incorrectly and created a whole different scenario of what happened than the actual real-life events.

I'm curious which videos you think will be on the Teslacam output. And how admissible in court you think the 360-degree video might be.

I’m sure the raw footage will still be available. I donā€˜t think Tesla is going to have a stitched, viewable 360 video you can watch.

This view from one of the Tesla patents is super intriguing to me.

The idea that the truck could be aware not just of cars, pedestrians, animals, and the pavement, but terrain around is really exciting. Often driving on Forest roads you get pretty close to the edge.

The Hummer had some pretty cool camera tech where you could show the view from underneath the truck which would be quite useful for off-roading. Just being able to see ditches rocks, or sometimes walls or steep hillsides is super useful.

I know… not exactly what you asked about, your thought triggered mine.

After watching AI day I was pretty excited about the possibilities of FSD for off-road driving. It will most likely take a long while longer to improve than FSD for city streets. From what I understood though it seems like FSD is able to recreate the surroundings in vector space. This would allow FSD to know where potholes, speed bumps, etc are on the street. But with further training, it should be able to see where dual-track "roads" are. Plus know where there are obstacles like rocks or boulders, cliffs, washed-out bridges, etc. Now it will be a relatively long time before I allow FSD to take me over Black Bear Pass. But for the computer, Black Bear Pass would be no more "scary" than other tight off-road locations. In fact, once FSD gets enough data to train on, it would be safer than letting a human drive these off-road locations. I swear the future is going to be super cool.

First though, let's get FSD working for normal paved roads. By then my Tesla stock should be able to keep me retired and out collecting more off-road data to help train FSD.

Having the stitched video available would produce better mirror angle views.

Yeah, I can see where the stiched video would be much better for "mirror" views.

I wonder though if we'll be able to save both the stitched and the raw footage.
