Eva are quite a bit heavier and do more damage to the roads, but this still seems quite high.

Another choice, for federal, would be to just have to submit mileage every year. Seems strange that if I owned 10 EVs, I’d still $2500, when I can only drive one car at a time.
Toyota Camry curb weight is 3,086 and 3,682 lbs.
Tesla Model 3 curb weight is 3,582 and 4,065 lbs.

at their lightest, these two cars are 496 lbs different. At their heaviest, the Model 3 is 383 lbs. heavier.

Trucks are a different story:
Ford F150 Raptor weighs: 5,710 lbs + 260# when "fully charged"
Tesla Cybertruck weighs: 6,843 lbs for the Beast... Quite a bit heftier.
Still though... Not crazy different. less than 900 pounds when full.

Alliances are great!

For the investment from EM/Tesla I would have expected something more… enduring.

Could also be a facade for EM for the rehabilitation of his public image
I’ve already described EM as a “New Christian.“ He’s on the spectrum and does not understand people. He understands politics even less.

This person is a 44, 45/47 voter. This is not someone with a political compass or cogent worldview. There really isn’t much more to say. The proof is in the pudding.

Remember this chestnut? “Shut up and dribble” – Laura Ingraham to LeBron James (2018)

??That and more emphatically.

No, there is no road tax in electricity taxes. We pay for roads in the U.S. through fuel taxes, not general revenues, income taxes, etc. I assume you aren’t a freeloader. We must pay our share somehow. In many states, there is now an efficient-vehicle tax, which any vehicle getting over 25 or 30 MPG must pay annually. That’s only fair.
Illinois has tolls everywhere. There’s enough money in tolls by themselves to cover our roadways when they’re not trying to steal money out of the pot! There’s enough surplus money in there that they can afford the governor a new helicopter every two years on top of the roadways! We don’t need any more taxes, they are already take enough!

My guess based on publicly available demographics data would be that for the average family the Tesla would overall be lighter, due to passenger weight difference :)

As the lea
Won't work if it is, he's just pissing off even more people, and those he's already pissed off aren't going to suddenly forgive him. This was always destined to fail as a "strategy".
Time and the ruse will probably help regarding the masses. Obviously it’s a shallow concealment.

The government collects about $50B/year in fuel tax, but spends $200B/year on roads. Where does the rest come from...? ?

I remember that nugget ?.

I believe EM’s understanding of political policy/philosophies fairly mature, though I will not pretend to know it exactly. And that does not imply he has not errored along the way, is strategy team needs the DOGE treatment.

You think there’s a strategy team? ?

Let me restate, EVs are typically heavier, but not always. We should have to pay some sort of tax, to help with road maintenance. I think $250 at a federal level is too high for the difference. But at some point EVs will be 90% or greater of the total traffic in the roads. The democrats should have got ahead of this, instead of giving tax breaks, now the republicans are going to tax way to much in EVs. We needed a middle ground on this.
Also I think (as in an opinion and not something there has been a test conducted) that EVs still do more damage to the roads, just due to the higher acceleration available.

We should just eliminate the CAFE Standards, then we'll collect plenty of tax once Detroit starts making 8MPG cars again

My ‘74 Camaro was like that! I used to tell people I’d probably get further per gallon if I just poured it on the road and slid on it.
