Hi all. This is my first post here. I have owned my amazing truck for almost 1 month now. I am pretty sure I have seen almost every video and post out there, but there seems to me a serious problem with the truck which I haven't seen posted, and unfortunately it caused me an accident already.

Cars that are 30K and under have ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear of the vehicle so you can see how close you are to a collision. I went into reverse, checked the camera, and went backwards, the truck did not send any kind of warning that a car just behind me was on my butt. I did not hit it hard, but not having a warning, or indicator that someone was there, was really horrible especially considering how expensive the vehicle is.

Saying that Tesla wants to save money by not adding in some sensors that would keep its drivers safer, seems like a poor excuse. To me, it would be ideal to switch out the useless mirror and put in an always active rear camera there with distance to object information visible. I looked for after market products and did not find anything.

My question is, what other features are seriously lacking in our trucks, and what can we do about it to improve it?

Thanks for your time.

Obviously you didn't read every post. The lacking of rear radar sensor in CT had been the topic since Jan. someone's beloved half backed his CT to a car a few months ago as well.

It's been like this with all Teslas for several years now. Vision and cameras only, to their demise of not working very well at all. Tesla got rid of ultrasonics (except for FWDs on the X) and radars in the front of cars as well. Those are more reliable I'd say but lack the capability of vision with AI and have to be interpreted, but mainly due to cost savings as well.

We are hoping that when the CT gets FSD say in 2-4 weeks or so, that it has the other vision features being able to self park, and have the distance judgment similar to ultrasonics... although again many don't trust these yet and they don't work well at times in a garage or with very near items (where needed the most at times). Automakers like BMW do the best job with ultrasonics giving the color view bars and distance along with different tone and speed beeps, etc.

Just part of the high-tech Tesla experience that actually is lower capability/tech in some other ways - to the demise that Tesla drivers probably have more accidents at times per car.

Could see them integrate back one day some other tech. I mean, seeing recent settlements on the X lawsuit that rain into a semi due to cameras not interpreting it (but radar would have), and the new motorcycle lawsuit where a 3 hit the guy at 80mph and didn't slow. Tesla may not settle, but it won't win the more frequent lawsuits.

I have Ben driving since 1973 and my 2020 m3 is the first car I have had with ultrasonics and before 2020 I have had no problem of running in it things.I never expected my car to do what I could do.

Thank you for the good response. I just wish there was a good alternative for us. I would really like to avoid accidents, damage to my CT and insurance increases.

Will this not be corrected when FSD is released? Not ultrasonic but still..
In the garage I park, there is a large cement barrier adjacent to the parking space. It is not detected with computer vision but it would be detectable with ultrasonic. It is just one example where I would not be able to use FSD park assist even when it does come out.

What do you mean under 30K? The build number? I was at GFTX just a few days ago and looked at a VIN number of a CT on the assembly line and it was in the 25K number sequence. They've not even made 30K yet. I don't think mine has US sensors and it's in the 17K range.

Hey C Cyber T, welcome to the group.

I feel the same way. Lack of a "closeness" sensor would be my only issue with the CT. The shape of the front end makes it a challenge to tell how close I am when parking. The front camera does help, but I'm used to a tone signal with the other cars I drive. My current "pull in until you feel the bump" approach to parking in my garage isn't the best. Hopefully this will be added in a software update.

Cheers!

30k is short for $30,000.

Some inexpensive and new cars with the feature but a 100k car does not. K = $1000
2024 Kia Soul - Starting at $20,190, this car includes rear parking assist along with other safety features.2024 Chevrolet Trax - Priced from $20,400, it offers standard Chevy Safety Assist tech, including rear collision warning.2024 Nissan Kicks - With a starting price of $21,050, it comes with rear parking assist and automatic braking.2024 Hyundai Elantra - Starting at $21,625, this model features rear collision detection as part of its safety suite.

Do you guys not use the cameras that make you able to see everywhere around the truck?
