Nearly all non-commercial trucks have had plastic bumpers for decades.

Yes, painted. They change color when scratched.

It's called plastic. Other kinds of plastic are less durable over time. And it's not an exact science, you can't quite know how durable your formulation is, how much UV absorption will happen, etc. But they're cheap to replace.

I don't know what got bees in your butts, but I'm just explaining why they exist. That was the question, wasn't it, 'who approved plastic trim'?

What crack are you smoking ? I’ve owned some sort of truck from
1991 till today and this is the first with plastic bumpers ! You want to use SUV’s?? . Not a truck. “plastic On the treads on top
Doesn’t make it a “plastic bumper.

Is that supposed to be an argument?

What are you arguing?

Most non-commercial light trucks have plastic bumpers and cover.

But a simple rumb over with a rag it is gone. These cheap plastics on Cybertruck cannot. Permanent scratches, and imagine how they look in 10-12 years. No wait. Just replace them every other year so truck looks good. That is the silliest suggestion I have ever heard.

Make it right the first time. Or at least the second go around.

Seriously who looked at and approved the plastic trim pieces from the supplier…fenders, rockers, sail panels, and tailgate cover and said yeah that will work ??‍♂ You breathe on it and it scratches way too soft !!??‍♂?
agree it is garbage. My tailgate was damaged just by leaning 3 very light 1x4s on it. Smooshed the edge of it. So weak.

What argument ? ?. I’m asking you what trucks are you talking about ? “Most”? Chevy, ford,Dodge,Toyota non of there truck lines have complete plastic bumpers some have a plastic insert maybe the tread ? So asking you what are “most”? SUV’s yes but trucks no.

Wait, people expect trucks not to get scratched while doing truck things? Is this a serious thread, or am I being punked here?

Coming from a 100% “truck guy “ who throws sht in and out and believe what you’re saying. I also believe the bumpers should be mostly steel with some plastic insert maybe on the tread like most of the truck company’s have . Not a huge fan of the plastic bumpers on a truck IMO. Now some of the other stuff mentions was a little silly

The problem isn't that it gets scratched from doing truck things. the problem is it gets scratched from not doing truck things. Look at the plastic trim around the bed of an F-150, or the plastic fenders on a jeep wrangler. Both hold up 100x better than the soft plastic on the cybertruck.

good thing for us is the aftermarket part upgrades for this platform is really taking off. People can easily coat their plastic parts with spray-in layers like Rhino Liner or template based adhesives until direct replacements are available.

Sounds like Teslas plastic formula isn't quite as hard as other OEMs. The assumption is they will improve over time. They likely already know this, and chose this area to cut costs. The CT is a completely, radically brand new platform. Version 1.0

It will improve over time.

See, this is the kind of feedback they need!

Because it's not 'waah it's plastic' but 'hey, this didn't meet what seemed like a basic usability function'.

I understand the complaint about the plastic. I'll be replacing both the front and back bumpers when a decent set with good clearances comes out (especially the back).

This log is a 6' by 6" soft wood post. I slid it in the back of the truck not thinking anything of it and this was the result. I'll either eventually come up with a metal solution or when someone makes a decent one replace it. This is the kind of thing a truck should have better (harder/rougher) plastic for. The rubbed off plastic is quite a bit deeper than it looks in the picture.

Does it seem like if you loaded wood or what not over the tail gate it would damage that tape stuff or does it seem pretty think ? I like it but wouldn’t want to now have a scratch in that and it looks worse ?
I'm not sure the texture us rough and tough but definitely a lot harder to scratch than the exposed plastics on the truck.
