Why does Tesla recommend a 40% speed offset?

I keep mine in hurry at 15% but based on the comments I might go back to 40 percent with standard and see how it goes.

This is exactly how I got my ticket on Memorial Day and I learned what caused it during my recent 800 mile trip!

40% over and not only that— even if you dial it down it automatically resets EVERY TIME it sees a new speed limit sign!!! So, as you’re moving through an area where you’re being throttled down — say from 65 to 50 then to 35 and to 25, instead of slowing down it goes BACK UP!! I did not realize this before and as I went from a 60 mile an hour speed zone even though I had dialed it back, it got into a 50 mile speed zone and cranked up the speed causing me to be ticketed for doing 60 in a 35.

There was nobody on the road except for me and the highway patrol officer and the truck doesn’t give a great perception of speed especially when you’re coming down an empty road from a mountain.

I just didn’t catch it and it is the dumbest possible logic that could be baked into the vehicle. I plan to rant about this more cogently later, but man oh man is this bad!

Well, it was valid! I wish it had have been mine!

I was clueless until this happened and honestly didn’t know how it had happened until this extended road trip where I was able to observe an analyze what the hell was happening!

You do not want to be in hurry mode at 40% self-driving through itty-bitty towns with bored sheriffs!

I’m soooo glad there’s a thread about this. My husband and I were just complaining about this yesterday.

- We live in Cheyenne.
- Going from our house to downtown (downtown being used here in the loosest of terms) the speed limit changes from 50 > 40 > 30 > 20.
- Most of the time the truck doesn’t show the correct speed limit.
- We’ll definitely get a ticket if we use FSD continuously.

Thankfully we love driving the thing manually because FSD is crap here.

What remains annoying is the absolute left lane focus on hurry mode, even though there is no need for it. Standard eliminates the left lane, but also erases a lot of the agility.
Yep. And we end up having to babysit the system too much, which kind-of defeats the purpose lol. They'll get it fixed.

Yes I agree me having to scroll my wheel as I’m going through massive speed changes is very annoying and we alllllll know this is where the speed traps are.

I do agree with it getting better and with robotaxi on the horizon it needs to occur soon.

I’m in Texas and use Hurry mode exclusively.
I am too and I did too until recently. I can’t stand hurry mode sitting in the left lane and only moving over if someone begins tailgating it. Standard mode goes 75-77 instead of 80-82 but my CT always moves back over after it’s done passing someone. Wish it drove a bit faster but I’ll take it.

So, in conclusion, is there a way to set these settings that obeys the law consistently?

Looking at what people set the offset to and what I set it to, and observing the results here and my personal experience, the offset doesn't do a friggen thing. I set it to 5% and when in a 55 mph zone the truck sets speed at 75mph. Pointless.

I agree with all said. I also really dislike it resets to 40% every speed change.

The two places where I need to manually intervene consistently are:

1) Work Zones - In NY there are speed cameras in work zones. FSD will never go below the speed limit in these zones quickly enough and would get me a ticket every single time without manual intervention.

2) 55mph to 35mph roads that enter rural towns. These are all speed traps near me, cops sit and ticket these areas nonstop. FSD doesn't slow down quickly enough, it will still be doing 50mph where the cops sit.

Not really. You have to constantly monitor and adjust. As I learned the hard way, you will get a ticket if you don’t.

It takes a lot of bandwidth and attention and some people will just prefer to drive themselves. Tesla has work to do.

Yes, 0% offset or just drive in chill. It WILL not go fast.
The reason I didn’t answer yes is because, while you’re correct, this will keep you from speeding it also will go slow enough to be too far BELOW the speed limit which is also a citable offense.

There is currently no “set it and forget it” FSD profile that will keep you out of trouble.
