In 1999 the five most influential vehicles of the 20th century were selected. Ford model T, Morris Mini, Citroen DS, VW Beetle, Porsche 911. The assembly line, Unibody, disk brakes, aerodynamics, active suspension and countless other innovations were introduced in these iconic cars. Who will make the list at the end of this century? Elon Musks vision has staged Tesla so far ahead that it's success can't be disputed even by the most negative analysts. Henry Ford did not radically improve the Model T design much but did improve the efficiency of how it was built so much so that the price kept going down to help make it one of the most successful of all time. We shall soon see how well the CT will do when they roll off the assembly line and are put into service. All of the cogs must work together. Idea to final product was a long (but impressively fast) road with many obstacles. A little perspective on how monumental the Cybertruck is.

2020 full size PU production. Not including mid size and foreign.
Ford - 787k
GM - 840k
Dodge - 563k

2.2 million domestic. 1.5 million CT pre-orders.

I think The model 3 could be on that list currently. The model 3 has influenced all other car manufacturers. They All now realize the game has changed. And yes, the Cybertruck will take it up several notches. When Tesla produces a vehicle that capable, at even close to the prices they've announced, our world will change.

It's early days yet.

Imagine a 4 seat CyberHatch that sells for $20k with a 50kWh battery and a 300 mile range. It would be the EV equivalent of the VW bug. A true "People's EV".

Tesla spent 4 generations making cars that conformed to previous manufacturing and visual norms. If the Cybertruck is successful, lots of options open up.

Of course I guess that would make the Cybertruck the most influential vehicle of the century then. Hmm.

I would've put the Honda CVCC/Civic/Accord on that list instead of the Porsche because their integration of compressive cooling into engine function itself was the capstone of efficient design that ended the century. Every car that was worth its salt was doing that by the end of the 20th century. They made the small/midsize car market worth buying into.

And yes, I hope the Cybertruck will be influential. But it might end up great technology that no one repeats, like the hyperefficient diesel engines or the Wankel rotary...
