I've been a lurker of this forum, checking it semi-often* in order to find out the latest of the most anticipated American Vehicle in history so far - i've heard of Tank Steering from the Rivian, but not Diamond Steering, exactly. What does it mean? When I google it, no definitive answer comes up. I'm hoping someone here can quickly educate me on it.

In the meantime, I'm liking the Triangular Mirrors that were recently added. I'm hoping to order at least a tri-motor one in 2-3 years when the vehicle hits peak production.

*no pun intended.
Thanks in advance, CT community!

A Youbuter coined the term for a new type of turn which he thinks is coming to the Cybertruck.

It is very likely not coming to the Cybertruck or any truck, so not a phrase you will need to worry about.

Although its not coming on the CT for technical reasons, Diamond steering is where all wheels are the opposite steering angles to eachother, forming a square shape (aka diamond pattern). This would allow the CT to turn on the spot with less tyre scrubbing than the Rivian Tank turn.

The main reasons it won't happen is: cost - it would require 4 independent steering rack systems instead of 2 for normal 4WS, alignment - the vehicle would have to always actively align all wheels to keep it going straight, and would not have the self centering all cars have because the wheel on each axle would not be connected mechanically, only electronicly. No mechanical Akerman geometry for proper wheel alignment around corners. Wheel clearance on the back axle is not large enough to support the steering angles required without making the bed smaller with much larger wheel arches. It's alo largely unnecessary in that customer would seldom if ever use it, buy would substantially increase cost and failure points.

But with turbine wheels it could also be used in boat mode.

the front of the front wheels will turn in towards each one anther,
the back of the back wheels will turn in towards each one anther,
witch would mack a easier and safer to do a tank turn.
