Camera is for FSD as well to look around the corner without exposing the nose to traffic.
Yep, probably both! Though i sort of doubt the FSD use case, as its a camera position only available on the CT. Would be kinda hard to train for as this is the only model with this cam position, but i would not be surprised if tesla went ahead and did it anyway!

if that was the case the new highland model 3 would have one as well. Its for offroading
Not only for offroading.

Tesla China's own website, until recently did show a front bumper camera on the model 3 refresh. No announcement about refresh of Model 3 performance.

Rumor is that there is a temporary supply problem and that there will probably still be a front bumper camera included when model 3 refresh are actually delivered to customers.

Right now rumor is U.S. model 3 refresh will not be until 2024Q1 so there is more time for updates. Maybe Fremont Model 3 refresh will have 1 or 2 giga-castings too.

.....
After months of anticipation the newly redesigned Model 3 was finally revealed last Friday, and while there was no official mention of the new electric sedan featuring a front bumper camera, it was literally front and center in several of the images on Tesla’s website, and even seen on the online configurator.

What is ridiculous about housing and placement of that bumper camera?

What do you think would have been better?
seems like standard OEM car camera maybe slightly better and newer but it is a camera. Same like Nissan, Porsche, Audi use in they high-end models

ok, it used the screen as a whole to light it up, but it wasnt the screen just there to light up the sensor.
The Pixel 6a has a very bright light under the screen that lights up the sensor area when you touch it.

The underscreen fingerprint sensor is lit up by the screens leds, not a seperate led.

Pretty sure that cam is for off roading, and looks like its designed to be easially replaced.
Yes, and it will be designed with three flat reference surfaces that are consistent from vehicle to vehicle to minimize employee time spent calibrating the aim of replacement cameras. It looks like they chose the upper horizontal surface, the passenger side vertical surface and the forward-facing back surface as the X/Y/Z reference planes.

Regardless of how many detractors try to paint Tesla as being haphazard and inexperienced at everything and everything automotive, you can rest assured that there is always a reasoned and rational method to the apparent madness. And the detractors know deep down inside that it is Detroit who needs help, not Tesla.

ask @cvalue13 , turns out the ct has less visibility and a smaller frunk.
“less visibility“ than many hoped/conjectured when thinking it has the driving position of a VW bus ?

but an always-on front camera (at relevant speeds) sure would cure a lot of forward visibility (below hood line)

What‘s to keep mud and snow and rain off front camera? Maybe only useful when parking or moving out?.
