Apple made this a thing for personalization and worked out well for them back in the day. Sure, resale value could be diminished with a "I love marsha" engraving on the tailgate but a "made in America" with flag/eagle or whatever your tattoo from a book look you're going for is possible. Doubt the "Things Remembered" store has an engraver large enough for what I'm looking for. Would love a thread on customization vs image templates vs just using vinyl wraps for this sort of thing. If anyone is in the industry, what are the options to have a drive in laser engraving system?

Hope someone answers your question. I think the big flat tailgate is just asking for some neat laser etching. I'd like to see what Tesla used to spell out CYBRTRK in oversized font, say six or eight inches high or large enough to run all the way across the tailgate.

I look at that flat tailgate as a blank canvas. Remember when everyone used to have airbrush paintings on their vans in the 70's. A photographer friend of mine Tony Prince took this photo of the SpaceX launch a couple years ago in Joshua Tree. It might look good on my tailgate.

I think there could be a business opportunity for cybertruck laser tattoo parlors. Just scale this up...

Sorry about the horrible music, i couldn't find a video without loud obnoxious music.

It would be quite easy to make a CNc laser engraver that can be mounted vertically. In fact you could probably take a normal hobby 1 and just stick it on a wall and it would work.
But for tailgate sized it would probably be mounted in it's own movable base that is brought to the vehicle, adjusted for square etc.

Sort of like just wearing a printed T-shirt is easier/cheaper/less permanent than getting a tatoo...
exactly...and just like your current girlfriend loves that you tattooed her name on your shoulder, your next one may not be so thrilled about it.

I like the idea of laser etching a Tri/Dual/Single model designation on the lower right of the tailgate. It would look cooler than a traditional adhesive backed 3D emblem. It would also deter Single and Dual owners from “cloning“ their trucks into a Tri Motor model.

Elon said there would be no badging on the Cybertruck.

Laser etching the tailgate... Oh man, that's a great Idea.
All you'd need is the design you wish to cut, in the proper format to be fed into an engraving machine.
Then the machine would need to bigger than this one, and sturdier to move the heavy tailgate.
And/Or... Do those machines come in a variety where it's the laser cutting head is the part that moves around, instead of the piece being cut? If so, you could etch the entire vehicle.

Now the question is... Does anybody know for-sure if the tailgate is easily removable?
It definitely has significant differences over the tailgates we are accustomed to.
First of all, with 3/8 inch thick steel, it's way, way heavier. Probably over 100 pounds.

Lastly, there a many methods of etching metal. It's been done for millennia. Laser is only the most modern method.
