I agree with you as did Brian McCafferty. Why couldn’t they have put the range extending battery under the rear seats? I’m sure customers would have given up that space to drive an extra 180 miles. And like you said sacrificing the frunk and the gear locker in the vault could have also been a solution. I guess Tesla engineers had their reasons.

These are simple to guess:

• They don't want to put it in the cabin because fire risk.
• They don't want to put it in the rear crumple zone because fire risk.
• The smuggler compartment is at least a third the space.
• The under-seat area is at least half the space.

Everything Tesla does is to avoid risk and small tail usages.

That said, I think they should go back to their original plan and have a double-layer pack. Let people choose to lose some cabin space for range if they want.

I agree with double-layer pack idea but instead of reducing cabin space they should adjust ground clearance ( set standard suspension height a little higher and reduce maximum clearance available).

Energy density improvements in next few years will not solve towing range issues. Need more cells.

Double layer pack would keep the weight low and centralized. It would also either reduce the ground clearance a bit or make the seats sit a bit higher. Possibly a combination of the two. An alternative would be to have the upper layer just extend into the cabin under the front and rear seats. It would require the seats to be reconfigured to be sitting lower (but on top of the higher level of the battery) and the heating/ventilation system might need to change a bit.

I'd really love to have the extended range without impacting the bed. But for now it seems that the bed is where Tesla has decided the extended range needs to be. My reservation isn't coming out for a while so there will be time to determine if I am OK with the current range sans the extender. In general I probably will be just fine. It will just take a bit more care and planning to make sure I don't run out of electrons somewhere beyond the reach of normal help.

The possibility of adding solar might just allow a portable solar array for emergency use. But also, by the time I get my delivery, there might be enough chargers in the remoter areas to not even need that.
