Hey all.

Really interested in getting a Cybertruck to replace my RAM 2500, which is the two vehicle for our Airstream. I've test driven the Cybertruck and it really sold me on it. It's got truck chops but yet, it (almost) drives like my Model S. And while range will be the challenge, I'm willing to deal with it to do away with the poor handling, noise and size of an HD truck.

That said, I'm running into one little snag... My wife is absolutely opposed to the purchase. It's not about the money, the brand or EVs (we're already an EV household). No, it's really the look that's the issue for her, along with what people think of the truck.

So, owners out there. If you were in a situation similar to mine, how did you convince the significant other?

Thanks in advance for sharing pitch advice with me. ;-)

Hmmm. That’s a tough one. Design is subjective to a large degree so convincing her it’s a great design may be problematic. I found in the past that butts-in-seats is the most effective method in ā€œconvertingā€ someone with Teslas in general. Maybe go that route. Once she experiences the engineering marvel - steering, FSD, & safety are on top of that list - she may decide the looks are secondary. Get her to smile while driving it. Not looking at it. (I do both. But each to their own).

Surprise her. It’s better to ask forgiveness than permission. If you are kicked out, camp mode will save you for sure ?

Jokes apart, I was also worried about the attention and the polarizing looks. Simple solution - just don’t wrap it and keep everything stock. Yours will be the lamest Cybertruck in a year or so, especially if you live in CA. Nobody will even bother to look at you or your truck!

Since you mentioned towing, please know that no EV truck is meant for long distance towing because of the aero. Hope you set the expectations to not get disappointed with the range drop from towing. We need pull through chargers and battery powered trailers for long distance towing with EV trucks.

My wife doesn't like the looks either, however she loves the way it rides. Both in the front and back seat, she says it's the most comfortable ride ever. Especially on our long drives.

If your wife hasn't driven in one yet, take her for a test drive.

Difficult situation! My wife and I make these kinds of decisions together, so I wouldn’t buy it if she were completely opposed.
BUT, there’s just nothing out there like the Cybertruck. I’m not referring to the looks so much as the exciting and joyful driving dynamics, including rear-steering, steer by wire, mechanical locking differentials (AWD, not beast), great forward vision, super versatile bed, ride height options… We enjoy driving it so much that we completely forget how jarring it looks… although we’ve got a sweet wrap on ours.
Since you’re asking for advice, you (and her) need to pray about it, and ask God to show you a way forward in this.
Happy praying!!

My wife didn’t like the looks of it in pictures. We rented one for the day and she was sold. It is so much more smooth and comfortable than not only any truck but really almost anything else out there at all.

I recommend either test driving one from Tesla or trying to rent one for the day from someone else

This is a difficult situation. Have you looked at other options? It's easy to fixate on what you think is best for you, but when you shop around you may find something much better. Have you tried Tinder? eHarmony? I met my Cybertruck loving wife on Match.com, for example.

I have to argue with the don't wrap it statement.
From many people that have wrapped them after driving them for a while the attention and perception changes. The stainless is very polarizing and gets a lot of opinions.
Wrapping it in flat black (the most common and one of the best looks) will make it blend into the rest of the traffic better and draw far less attention. This has come from many people that have done wraps.

Appearance is always a perception thing and is a tough one to get over for people. Show her pictures of it wrapped. The difference is pretty big.

My wife actually likes my CB. Our situation is slightly different and I’m the hater.

I love my Model S, C8, FJ and CB. I care about design and while it’s subjective what the car looks like is a big component of my purchasing decisions. I don’t care what other people think but it needs to be attractive/interesting/cool for me to buy a car. I have never bought a bland fungible functional A to B transportation unit, nor will I ever. (I think the lamest car I ever had, imo, was my ā€˜99(?) Dodge Intrepid and at least that had the distinction of being iirc the first domestic car assembled entirely by robots).

Of all of the designs that they put out I think the Model X is a huge fail for Tesla. With the exception of the falcon wing doors and the captain chairs (in the sixth seat set up), I think it’s a bulbus hot mess of a design. I really really really dislike it!

But the solution in our marriage is simple: It’s her car I don’t get any kind of meaningful vote. She can get whatever she wants and so can I.

She’s also going to wrap it some ridiculous color. As far as I’m concerned there are only roughly four legitimate car colors: black, white, silver and maybe red if you must. Honorable mention for bare metal and sometimes blue, but that’s it!!

I don’t think healthy couples relinquish their individuality. I don’t like the looks of my wife’s car, but she does and that’s all that matters. I think the same approach could/should work for you and your wife.

I got mine back in February, over objections from my wife. We were a spectacle for a while when there were less than a 1000 of us. I was going to keep it SS. This summer my wife saw a black wrapped CT and said "that actually looks good!" I had to agree the SS was getting a little old and had it wrapped. Now, she likes the truck and even likes driving it (it is my daily driver and she has a brand new Audi EV.)

Interesting theory to wrap. I can see why it might help blend in. In my area, I’m seeing a lot more non-wraps. If I’m just one among them, I might draw less attention. If I get the stealth black one, I’m sure many would recognize me as the black CT around the block. Without the wrap, I might be one of the many CTs that could be going to SC or a random one. Eventually, if I’m the only one without a wrap, then I’m definitely getting one. Whatever it takes to not draw attention or get spotted. I took delivery late evening, so couldn’t inspect that day, and I couldn’t inspect it in the driveway the next day without having someone stopping by to check it out. I had to take it to SC parking lot to inspect it. This thing is an attention magnet!

That’s what I did. ?ā€ā™‚ Had to come up with a story to have her ride with me on delivery day so she can drive the other car back home. Wish I took a video of her reaction.

OK, not a complete surprise; she knew I put in a reservation years ago. However, she didn’t know we were going to pickup one this year.

That said, I'm running into one little snag... My wife is absolutely opposed to the purchase. It's not about the money, the brand or EVs (we're already an EV household). No, it's really the look that's the issue for her, along with what people think of the truck.

My thought was the CT would be her daily to use for her business; she often uses our Expedition. After doing a test drive, I knew she wasn’t going to like it, so it’s my daily now.

Long story short, there needs to be some level of consensus between partners for it to happen. She may not like [driving] it (she does find it comfortable to ride in), but she’s not opposed to me having it.

Maybe the compromise is that it’s an extra vehicle for you to use and the Ram is used for trips.

My wife had a change of heart after my color change, she now calls it a big sports car. As for what other people think, if you live your life for other people then they control you, that's not living. As was said above, the tech, handling, ride and comfort is all true and more. Best vehicle I've ever owned from TR250, '70 GTO, Impala, Ranger to four F150 SuperCrew and many more in my 62+ years of driving.
