Yes, but when it comes to pets or humans, it’s better to think of worst case scenarios and not best case scenarios. As I mentioned in my post earlier, if we really have to put the dog in the bed, it’s better to use a good kennel and secure it really well. We're all cargo.
I dunno about you, but I strap in my cargo, too. It doesn't need to breathe, but it does need to not slosh around in the mountain curves.

In best case scenarios, even an infant in a car seat can be placed in the truck bed at 5 mph in the parking lot. If you are driving around in a farm at max 20 mph, dogs can go anywhere. Airbags, seatbelts, crumble zones, etc. exists for worst case scenarios.
If you go to some developing countries, people sit on top of a moving bus and train! It’s all about how much risk one is willing to take when accidents happen.
Nothing is 100% safe. It’s all about lowering the odds of injury or fatality. Even a Kennel is not safe as it doesn’t deploy airbags. It’s all about lowering odds. As other posters said, if vehicle rolls over or driver makes sudden turns to avoid a collision, do you want to add one more variable to the equation to worry about?
Stress is high with Pets/humans compared to Cargo. Cargo doesn’t bleed. Mammals do! ?
