I agree about the inside latch but what I'm also reading elsewhere is that he was passed out and they couldn't get to him from the outside (no manual from the exterior)... But I mean how hard is it to break the glass?? It's no different than when there's an accident and the door is jammed shut.

The surprising stigma is that many folks fall for these false hood stories.
Oh god, two family members sent me this story.... I was driving the truck at the time and instantly took a picture of the CT Manual on how to open the door without power. Then, I took another picture of myself sitting in the driver's seat, touching the manual door release, to show how accessible it is. They replied, "Oh good, I didn't want you dying in your Cybertruck" .....

The laminated glass ("Tesla Armor Glass") is fairly hard to break. No problem for first-responders, but the average bystander can't just walk up and bust the window Reacher-style.

Not that hard...a while back I saw a video of someone peeling the window like they were rolling up a beach towel. Took only seconds and they were in the truck.

I don't believe the lawsuit has merit. The drunkenness alone is probably sufficient for the defense.

That said, there are remediations that could improve safety:

  1. Post-crash announcements. Both screens should show the location of the manual latches, with animated arrows, and verbal instructions via the sound system.
  2. Pop open the doors. This one is tricky, since the current safety rules emphasize keeping the doors shut in a collision. But if the vehicle is at rest, and the pyro fuses blown, then the electronics have only moments remaining to take action.
  3. Roll down the windows. Or, lower them slightly.
  4. Of course, none of the above will work if the collision disabled the electronics, so...
  5. Have a "crash module" in each door, which would beep and flash a red light at the manual latches after a collision. They would need to be independently powered. This adds cost of course, but the unit price would be small for just a beepy/flashy light that only needs to work for 5 minutes.

Once the glass portion is shattered, the window can be folded/rolled as you say. The tricky part is shattering the glass.

My Mom used the manual release on the door for a few months before she discovered the push button release. This lawsuit is a waste of taxpayer money. They should throw it out.

If the guy was that drunk then he shouldn't have been driving and was a threat to kill innocent people.
He was too drunk to remember that you can manually open the door? Oh, that is definitely Tesla’s fault.

Also, the manual door release for the front door is about as accessible as it gets. It's actually more obvious than the digital microwave button that is the actual release.
IKR. People who've never ridden in my truck keep pulling the release instead of using the door button!

I hope Tesla and the Bar both file countersuits
This lawsuit is a waste of taxpayer money.
Everyone is entitled to be heard in court. Justice is never a waste of money.

Frankly, the bar has more liability than Tesla IMHO. It's illegal to over-serve alcohol, and there is precedent for bars being held partially liable.

Even though I believe the suit against Tesla will not prevail on the merits, that does not make it "frivolous".

All good ideas.

The Mercedes SLS with gullwing doors famously had pyros that blow the doors off in the event of a rollover. I'm sure an auto-popper could be done. I personally think the lack of any way to manually open the door from the outside is a legit concern. But I guess it's no different than if a regular car door was just locked.

The DeLorean manual actually suggests that, in the event of rollover, that you put your feet on the windshield and pop it out to escape!

I wonder what discovery will be like. Not sure how Tesla data upload works if the vehicle is immediately destroyed in the wreck. It's an industrial area, so there may be security camera data to be subpoenaed. From what I remember from the early days of the news on the wreck, the truck was traveling at a very high rate of speed. Manufacturer and Bar lawsuits are nothing new in cases like this. This is where the word "overserved" came from, lawyer speak.
