I don't think it's impossible. It actually should be possible to offer a small EV pickup for less than $50,000. But for whatever reason, no one has tried this yet.

Good point. And even if you upgrade to the dual-motor 4WD version (500 hp, vs. 300 hp for the single-motor 2WD) and the Long Range Battery Pack (350 miles, vs. 260 miles for the Standard Pack), the estimated final price is ... $49,999. Still under $50,000.

OK, so both Slate and Telo are planning to offer small EV pickups for less than $50,000.

Now, maybe you are skeptical about claims from startup companies with no track records of actually making trucks. In that case, wait for a week and see what Ford has to say:

Ford will reveal August 11 in Kentucky what is expected to be its 2028 T3 midsize electric pickup truck on the new, lower-cost EV platform developed the last three years in the automaker’s California skunkworks.

The rumor mill suggests that Ford's pricing has risen, but it still seems quite possible that it could come in below $50,000. We'll find out soon.

The source said the midsize Ford EV truck will be priced somewhat higher than its previously rumored $25,000-$30,000.

Before Tesla attempts to build another truck they should at least make an effort to understand the truck market better.

They got a lot of pre orders due to its price and usability. What they ended up producing was anything but.

They have made their bed with the idea that 300 miles of range is enough and using minimalism to reduce cost. And that works for cars so that belief has been reinforced by the success of the Y and 3.

But it backfired on the truck.

Rather than try to find a way to cut cost or offer discounts, they need to look at reconfiguring the battery pack to get 400+ miles range. It could be done with an updated chemistry and longer form factor - 46100.

No matter what they try in terms of technology, a 300 mile EV truck is not going to sell in volumes that make it profitable.

Cybertruck owners: "The Cybertruck isn't selling as well as it should be, and it's obviously because the range is too low and the price is too high. So Tesla should use their resources to try to fix that."

Tesla management: "The Cybertruck isn't selling as well it should be, and it's obviously because it still has a steering wheel and pedals. So let's use all of Tesla's resources to try to fix that."

OK, this might be an exaggeration, but there is an element of truth to it.

Of course, she says that two years after I dropped an early and somewhat not-ever-expecting-it to be built.
