So I’ll start by saying that I personally had no experience of Grok prior to the recent Tesla update and that at first I felt it was pretty gimmicky.
Over the last couple of months though I’ve become rather fond of talking with Ara in the car and have learned some very useful things it can do.
I’m not new to personal assistants but I can say undoubtedly that this is FAR superior to my experiences with Alexa or the Google home assistant or Siri for that matter which reside in various devices around our home.
So I have some questions. To what extent can Grok replace these assistants at home? What is the best device for running with a wake word? Can it do much in the way of home automation?
Do any of you actually do this in your own home?
I’d like seamless continuity between the cars (model x and CT) and my home and with a view to the future which will likely include an Optimus for us, I’d like my family and I to get more comfortable operating it. Any advice?
How do I take this a step further?

I realize that. Night and day difference. That’s precisely why I’m asking. Exposure and familiarity have to count for something and increasing those is my goal. For my family and for myself. Like you said, you have to know what to ask and that takes practice . I just honestly don't really know how to make that happen and I thought, where better to ask?

Start with using it in place of Google and then think deeper about what you want to know. Example: Grok, should I buy a Cybertruck Luxe version that includes free lifetime super charging for $115k or should I buy a Honda Accord for $45k? I plan to use this vehicle for the next 10 years, driving 20k miles per year. Please consider maintenance and the fact I have a 10kw solar panel system on my house.

The sky is the limit, or better yet whatever your imaginations allows.

Zappier Bridge is a good start as it will allow you to integrate Grok response through Alexa.

Download the Grok app onto your phone and use it to build out your system needs. It can also write any necessary code for integration into some of the DIY setups. 👍

Thank you. So what are these “community hacks” since there isn’t really a grok speaker or home hub type thing.?
I’m more than ready to try super-grok. I just want more than simply using it in the car and I don’t really sit at a computer that much.
I’ve found using it on my phone to be the most helpful. I use it daily and admittedly rarely use it in my CT.

So you said this was all about what questions you ask which I agree with so here are some off the top of my head examples of some stuff I’d like to do , “suggest some awesome recipes I can make based on what’s in my fridge or on sale locally” or “what would be a good thing to do with the kids based on what’s happening locally and the weather” or “I want to go on a getaway. Where should I go that’s not crowded but fun and has good deals? Should I Airbnb or get a hotel? Drive my own car or fly? Rent a car or turo? Maybe a good deal on a cruise”.
“Are there any good shows coming to town on days I’m likely to have off (very complicated schedule and be able to find childcare , what’s the best way to get tickets? Is there a presale? A fan club to join etc?”
“I’d like to plan well for paying taxes this year but leave as much available for investing as possible, help me with that”, “knowing something about my kids and the needs/interests/wants they have, what are some good extracurricular options that also aren’t super painful scheduling and commuting wise”, “help me look at my budget and identify relative duplicates or extraneous expenses that would be impactful if eliminated” , help me optimize my pool pump and appliance use times with my complicated powerall system and TOU plan that’s also part of a VPP”. “Look at my schedule and my partners schedule and knowing something about them help me figure out the best way to trade to get the days off I want/need” , “which one is most likely to agree to trade?”like for example, don’t suggest I ask my Indian partners to trade in such a way that they work on Diwali and so on.
All of these are the type of things that require integration and access to knowledge about my life, accounts, acquaintances, habits, groceries, appliances etc. So I’m really after a way to maximize that integration.
As for the phone thing, can you elaborate? Do you just have the grok app open all day? How and when do you use it?
Also, what does super grok add that makes it more useful?

Dunno what you have in terms of home automation … i used Apple’s homekit for a while but it is very limited and the Siri front end terrible. Since quite a few years i use Home Assistant (HA); an OS running on a raspberry pi (can also just be a mac or pc) which is way more powerful. It controls all my lights, several doors, sprinkler, HVAC, solar and incoming energy and more. It has a voice assistant that is flexible i.e., you can use grok as one of its integrations.

HA is a pretty deep dive but truly automates your house and then some…

I’d buy an Optimus that just sits in the corner and charges but runs Grok.
Or any other appliance they made specifically for it. A Tesla speaker basically

Your questions/integrations are all great ideas. I don’t think the tech is quite there yet and you would be integrating a large amount of personal details into the Ai system.
For me, I am constantly battling with keeping my stuff private. I no longer use Google, I pay for email and specific cloud storage apps which aren’t 100% private anyway. Privacy is a whole other rabbit hole.
I also have but only lightly use Home Assistant. It’s amazing on what it can do but for my skillset I’d almost need a degree in programming/tech to make it work. It’s not hard it just takes a lot more time to learn than I’m willing to put into it. Again, this is just my experience. It may be a lot easier for others.

When I said my phone, I’m mainly referring to when I use it. I do a lot of my online stuff, such as this, on my phone. Grok has simply replaced 95% of the times I use Google.

For me, the more often I ask it questions, the more I learn from the responses about what it can do. Over time my questions become a bit more in depth as I learn how Grok works. Simply for me at this point it’s a supercharged Google.

I’m curious yet nervous to see if how and when it gets integrated into the FSD of our cars.

One thing about Grok that really got me more interested in it was asking it financial investment-like advise.

Example: If I have $100k in an investment that grows at 10% each year and I add $1k per month, will I be able to afford $35k per year in college fees for 4 straight years starting in 7 years?

Something like that but these were quick numbers. The replies I get lead me to ask more. For example Grok will ask me if I want to include any taxes ore predicted market fluctuations etc.

It has really helped me with my planning for college and retirement. It’s also great for buying a home, cars, or other assets. At this point for me, it’s biggest limitation is me.

I've found with Grok you have to be super duper specific with what you want otherwise it kind of bullshits its way through the answer. I am still just learning to use it same as most of you. For the most part I use it for questions im too lazy to look up or to add Bacon to CT pics. Chat GPT does a better job with images from my experience, but it takes way longer to do it.
